Madison High School's boys' volleyball team is gearing up for another competitive season. The team, led by Coach Stacy Tongg, has its sights set on the CIF San Diego Championship title. With a strong core of returning players and promising additions to the team, Madison High has the potential to achieve its goal this year. Among the top returning players is senior Allen Sola, who brings considerable knowledge of the game and physical strength to the team. Sola has been a starter and main contributor since his freshman year, and his leadership skills make him a valuable asset on and off the court. Another key player is junior Colin Navarro, who has been a core player and starter since his freshman season. As the only club player on the team, Navarro brings a high level of skill and versatility to the court. Senior John Hedley is also expected to make an impact this season. Hedley may have started as an opposite hitter, but his transition to middle blocker serves to strengthen the team's blocking capabilities. Rounding out the returning players is junior setter Brody Lacsam. Though he only has two years of experience, Lacsam's natural leadership abilities and dedication to improving his skills make him an important asset to the team. Coach Tongg looks for specific qualities in potential team captains, including leading by example both on and off the court, respecting the game and their peers, and being unafraid to speak up and hold their teammates accountable. However, with tryouts yet to happen, there is still uncertainty as to who will take on this role for the upcoming season. Team chemistry and camaraderie are crucial elements for any successful team, and Coach Tongg has a plan in place to foster these qualities within the team. She emphasizes the importance of respect among teammates, regardless of their role on the team, and wants each individual to have a defined role and purpose within the team. Motivation is another important aspect of a successful team, and Coach Tongg understands that different players may need different forms of motivation. With the ultimate goal of winning a championship, she hopes to use the team's talent and the presence of many seniors to motivate each player to push themselves to their full potential. The biggest challenge in preparing for this season has been working with different personalities and ensuring all players understand and embrace their roles. Coach Tongg also emphasizes the importance of staying injury-free and keeping players healthy, especially those who play multiple sports. The team's schedule for the season is a mix of challenging and competitive games. As a Division 3 team, they will face off against tough Division 1/Open teams as well as a top Division 4 team. Coach Tongg understands the importance of not only being competitive but also having time to work on areas of improvement. She does not see playing weaker opponents as beneficial, as it neither challenges the team nor helps them improve. As for her coaching style, Coach Tongg remains consistent in her focus on player development and allowing all players to contribute to the team's success. She understands that playing the same starting players and not giving others a chance to play will not benefit the team in the long run. Aside from skill and physical prowess, the mental aspect of the game is equally important to Coach Tongg. She sees it as crucial for players to have the confidence to perform during tough situations and to be able to push through even when things are not going well. To ensure the team is physically prepared for the season, Coach Tongg has implemented a rigorous training and conditioning program. She understands the importance of building strength and endurance to perform at a high level and prevent injuries. Additionally, the team emphasizes mental training to develop mental toughness and learn coping strategies for tough moments in matches. In conclusion, Madison High School's boys' volleyball team has all the components for a successful season. With a strong core of experienced players, promising new additions, and a determined coach, they have their sights set on bringing a championship banner back to their school.
