The Malibu High School basketball team is gearing up for another exciting season, and the anticipation is running high. This year, the team will be led by experienced coach David Goosen, and he has a clear vision for what he wants to achieve with his talented team. From emphasizing the importance of team chemistry and mental toughness to pushing his players to reach their full potential, Coach Goosen is confident that this year's team has all the ingredients for success.
One of the main factors that will contribute to the team's success is the return of their top players from last season. Coach Goosen shared that their goal is to "continue to develop and get better as the season progresses," and having experienced players on the team will play a significant role in achieving that goal.
Some of the standout returning players include Dylan Goosen, a senior point guard who averaged an impressive 33.1 points per game last season, making him the 4th highest scorer in California and 14th in the country. His ability to shoot and score at all three levels makes him a special asset to the team. But Coach Goosen is also excited about the addition of new players, especially 5'9 freshman shooting guard Tommy Cupp.
Despite being a freshman, Cupp has a great feel for the game and is a hard worker, making him a strong contender for a leadership role on the team. When asked about what qualities he looks for in potential team captains, Coach Goosen emphasized that a winner is key, and Dylan Goosen has already been appointed as this year's team captain. Team chemistry and camaraderie play a vital role in any successful basketball team.
To foster this, Coach Goosen has incorporated a lot of team bonding activities, both on and off the court. The team is also scheduled to participate in a tournament in Las Vegas, where they will have the opportunity to not only compete against tough opponents but also build stronger relationships as a team.
As a coach, motivating players to push themselves to their full potential is a top priority for Coach Goosen. He shared that they have been "incorporating a lot of team bonding-type activities off the court," in addition to competitive practices where the winning team is rewarded. This approach helps the players stay motivated and work together towards a common goal. However, the team has faced some challenges in preparing for this season. Coach Goosen pointed out that depth and experience are their weaknesses, as many of their players are young and inexperienced.
