Legacy in Motion: Marlboro High Cheer Dominates 2025 Season with Heart, Grit, and Back-to-Back Titles
For Marlboro High School’s cheerleading program, the 2025 winter season was not just about cheers and stunts—it was about rewriting the program’s history. Under the steady guidance of Coach Karissa Ludden, the Mustangs charged into a season filled with change, challenge, and opportunity—and came out the other side as champions, leaders, and standard-setters.
From claiming their second consecutive state title to reaching the semifinals at NHSCC Nationals for the first time since 2018, the Marlboro cheer squad made this season one to remember. More importantly, they laid the foundation for a bright future fueled by unity, resilience, and relentless determination.
A Leadership Core That Sets the Tone
While every athlete played a crucial role in Marlboro’s success, the backbone of the 2025 team was undoubtedly the senior class. With five seniors—Lily, Leia, Hailey, Elle, and Vanessa—leading the way, the team found stability and strength during a year of major transition.
“This group led with consistency, positivity, and purpose,” said Coach Ludden. “They kept the team grounded and united through every high and low. Their leadership was the glue that held us together.”
Even as the team welcomed many newcomers into significant roles, the seniors provided a model of grace under pressure, making space for others to grow while holding the team to championship standards.
A Season of Firsts—and Seconds
What began as a rebuilding year quickly transformed into a season for the record books. Marlboro entered two new divisions—Small Non-Tumbling Traditional and Medium Non-Tumbling Gameday—after seeing a drop in team size. On paper, it may have looked like a setback. In reality, it became an opportunity for greatness.
And greatness followed.
“This season was nothing short of historic,” Coach Ludden said. “We walked away with four grand championships, advanced to the semifinals in both routines at NHSCC, and captured our second state championship, back-to-back—this time in the Group 4 Gameday division.”
Even in the Traditional category, the Mustangs narrowly missed a second title, placing second by just 0.3 points. Yet what defined the year wasn’t the medals or banners—it was the sense of belief that built with each milestone.
A Turning Point in Florida
Few moments matched the magnitude of Nationals in Florida, where Marlboro set its sights on making the semifinals—a goal the team hadn’t reached in seven years. But the Mustangs didn’t just qualify in one category. They did it in both.
“That moment validated every ounce of work,” said Ludden. “It showed this team they not only belonged there—they were ready to make history.”
Another defining moment came closer to home: winning the state championship for a second consecutive year. It wasn’t just a win—it was a statement that Marlboro’s cheer program had arrived and was here to stay.
Rising Stars and Rebuilding Success
Coming into the season, Marlboro had lost 11 seniors—more than half the team—and a few other athletes chose not to return for competition. That left major holes to fill. But what could have been a rebuilding year turned into a showcase of growth.
“So many of our underclassmen and first-time varsity athletes stepped into major roles,” Ludden explained. “Watching their progression was incredible—from wide-eyed newcomers to confident, dependable athletes.”
These rising stars didn’t just survive the pressure—they thrived in it. Whether taking on new positions in stunts or learning to adapt mid-routine, their willingness to evolve became a cornerstone of Marlboro’s success.
Weathering the Storms Together
Every long season brings its share of obstacles, and Marlboro was no exception. Early in the year, the team lost a key senior flyer to injury, requiring a three-month stretch with an alternate. But instead of unraveling, the team responded with resilience.
“They never wavered,” said Coach Ludden. “Practicing five days a week—sometimes three hours at a time—they were fully committed to the process.”
From adapting routines on the fly to supporting each other through physical and emotional hurdles, the athletes demonstrated what it truly means to be a team. That determination became the heartbeat of the season.
The Seniors: Heart, Legacy, and Leadership
The influence of this year’s senior class will be felt for seasons to come. Four of the five had been with the program all four years, and their presence became foundational.
“They led with humility, strength, and unwavering pride,” said Ludden. “Their energy lifted every practice, and their support kept the younger athletes inspired.”
Beyond their performances, they cultivated a team culture rooted in trust, motivation, and grit. Their legacy is not only measured in titles—it’s measured in the confidence and capability of the teammates they leave behind.
A Spark for the Future
As Marlboro looks ahead, Coach Ludden sees more than just returning athletes—she sees future champions ready to rise.
“Our underclassmen now truly understand what it takes to compete—and succeed—at the highest level,” she said. “They’re more motivated than ever to rise to the challenge again.”
With offseason training already in sight, the returning athletes are focused on refining stunts, building endurance, and strengthening teamwide confidence, especially in the traditional and gameday formats. The goal? To not just match their achievements but to raise the bar higher.
Offseason with a Purpose
This offseason won’t be a break—it’ll be a launchpad. Coach Ludden is pushing the team to sharpen every edge of performance.
“We’re focused on improving stunt technique, developing higher-level skills, and building overall stamina,” she said. “We also want to grow our collective confidence. Now that we’ve set a new standard, we have to train to exceed it.”
With new members expected to join next season, the coaching staff is also preparing to blend fresh talent with veteran leadership to keep Marlboro’s culture strong and competitive.
The Final Word
From adversity to achievement, the 2025 Marlboro High School cheerleading season was a masterclass in transformation. What started as a rebuilding year became a celebration of resilience, leadership, and sisterhood. The Mustangs proved that when heart meets hustle, legacies are made—and when a team believes in one another, nothing is out of reach.
Their story is far from over. In fact, the next chapter is already being written—one practice, one routine, and one rising cheerleader at a time.
