As the new high school football season approaches, all eyes are on the Marquez High School football team in Los Angeles. After ending last season with a record of 6-4, the team is determined to come back even stronger this year.
We had the opportunity to speak with Coach Rudy Fortiz about the team’s progress and goals for the upcoming season. One of the first things we asked Coach Fortiz was about the top returning players from last season. He mentioned that their sophomore quarterback will be a key player to watch and that the team’s success will heavily rely on how quickly he can adapt to his new role.
While some may see having a young quarterback as a challenge, Coach Fortiz sees it as an opportunity for growth and development. He believes that this young player has the potential to make a big impact on the team this year. In addition to the sophomore quarterback, Coach Fortiz also mentioned two returning players who he believes will make a significant impact on the team.
RB Joshua Ayala and LB Issac Diaz have both had impressive off-seasons in the weight room, showing strength and dedication to improving their skills. Coach Fortiz believes their determination and hard work will reflect positively on the field and make them valuable assets to the team.
When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Fortiz looks for players who possess certain qualities and stand out as leaders on and off the field. He mentioned that he is considering Sophomore Elyjah Staples for the role, who plays both defensive end and tight end.
Staples has shown strong leadership potential and Coach Fortiz believes he will be an essential leader for the team this year. Moving on to the schedule for the upcoming season, Coach Fortiz mentioned that there are definitely some tough opponents on the roster. With many of the previous season’s players graduating, the team will rely heavily on its younger members to step up and face these tough opponents.
Despite the challenges, Coach Fortiz is excited about the potential of the younger players and believes they can rise to the occasion. When asked about any changes in his coaching style this year, Coach Fortiz mentioned that his approach has evolved from his previous seasons at King Drew and Crenshaw.
He has learned to be more patient and understanding with his players, knowing that each individual has different strengths and areas for improvement. Coach Fortiz also emphasized the importance of creating a positive and supportive team culture, one that fosters growth and teamwork.
