As the new basketball season approaches, excitement and anticipation fill the air at Maywood Academy High School. Under the leadership of Coach Anthony Castro, the team is determined to make a big run this season and achieve success. With a heavy senior team, they plan to take it one game at a time and rely on their top returning players, new additions, and strong team chemistry to achieve their goal. The Maywood Academy team will be led by a group of talented returning players, who have all shown their abilities and contributions on the court. Among them are seven key players who will play a crucial role in the upcoming season. Coach Castro praises these players, stating that they all bring something special to the table and do key things on the floor. This includes their skills, athleticism, and leadership abilities that make them stand out from others. One particular player who stands out is Matthew Lomeli, a first-year varsity player who had an impressive off-season with the team. Coach Castro states that Lomeli has great energy and is his go-to 6th man on the bench. Not only is he a valuable player who can post, shoot, and defend, but he also brings great size and versatility to the team. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Castro looks for qualities such as leadership, dedication, and a willingness to hold others accountable. In his eyes, everyone on the team has the potential to be a leader and he does not label any one player as the captain. This builds a sense of unity and accountability among the team, with everyone holding each other to a high standard. Team chemistry is crucial for any successful team, and Coach Castro has already been working on this aspect since April. The team has been participating in off-season games and tournaments and has bonded through their shared experiences. As the season progresses, they plan on continuing to build their chemistry and camaraderie through team-building activities and a strong emphasis on teamwork. Coach Castro believes in motivating his players by exposing them to outside influences and experiences. This could be bringing in a guest speaker such as a college coach or a former/current player to share their stories and inspire the team. Hearing first-hand about the dedication and hard work it takes to reach the next level of basketball motivates the players to push themselves to their full potential. The Maywood Academy team faced some challenges while preparing for this season, particularly with finding a gym to practice in.
