Menlo School Girls Soccer Delivers Grit, Growth, and Guts in Memorable 2025 Season
The 2024-2025 winter soccer season was one of emotional highs, heartbreaking setbacks, and undeniable growth for the Menlo School Girls Varsity Soccer team. Under the guidance of Coach Ross Ireland, the squad overcame a daunting preseason, mid-season adversity, and the heartbreak of penalty shootouts to emerge as one of the most competitive programs in Northern California.
From dazzling individual performances to gritty team efforts, the Knights' season was a masterclass in perseverance, talent, and teamwork.
The Magicians in the Midfield and Attack
The heart and soul of Menlo's attack this year came from Roya Rezaee, a central attacking midfielder with a flair for the dramatic. Whether scoring curling shots from distance, dishing out no-look assists, or fooling defenders with her mesmerizing footwork, Roya consistently produced moments of brilliance that left both opponents and fans in awe.
“Roya conjured creative attacks out of nothing,” said Coach Ireland. “She was our leading scorer and assister—our creative engine.”
Another key contributor was Angelica Chou, whose talent was nothing short of electric. Before a mid-January injury during practice cut her season short, Chou was arguably the most dangerous attacker in the region. Her foot skills, vision, and finishing ability were unmatched.
“Until her injury, we knew we had the most potent attacker in the region,” Ireland added. “Her goals and skills were second to none.”
The loss of Chou could have derailed any team. Instead, Menlo regrouped—and roared forward.
Highlights, Headaches, and Heroics
The Knights began their campaign with a brutally tough preseason schedule, facing off against several regional powerhouses. Despite the challenges, the team showed flashes of excellence—even before their full roster came together.
A major early-season highlight came with a 5-1 rout of Los Gatos, a result that signaled Menlo's potential to the rest of the state. That was followed by a statement win over league rival Sacred Heart, a performance that solidified Menlo as the team to beat.
“The home win against Sacred Heart showed we were the team to beat in our league,” Ireland said.
Later in the season, a nail-biting win over Menlo-Atherton proved the team could not only dominate, but also grind out results in tight matches. But the emotional peak of the season may have come in the CCS first round penalty shootout victory against Carlmont, a moment that united the team and electrified the Menlo faithful.
“That shootout was the most emotional moment of the season,” Ireland reflected. “It showed our character.”
Growth and Grit from Rising Stars
While stars like Rezaee and Chou drew headlines, several other Knights blossomed into crucial roles as the season progressed.
Krista Arreola emerged as a true on-field leader, even without the official captain’s armband. Her presence and maturity made her one of the team’s most reliable players.
“Krista became a true leader,” said Ireland. “She led by example in every way.”
Other notable risers included Julia Axelrod and Audrey Hochstetler, who displayed remarkable commitment to the team and elevated their games when it mattered most. Bianca Putanec, meanwhile, became a vocal leader, growing in both confidence and influence with each match.
“Bianca has grown immensely as a leader,” Ireland noted. “She found her voice and used it well.”
Resilience in the Face of Adversity
Injuries. Tough losses. Pressure-packed games. The 2025 Knights faced it all—and refused to crumble.
Despite losing key players and suffering the inevitable ups and downs of a long campaign, the team continually bounced back. Whether adjusting formations, elevating bench players, or leaning on grit over flair, Menlo always found a way to respond.
“Despite absence, injuries, and the odd flat performance, the team bounced back,” said Ireland.
That ability to adapt and rebound became one of the team's defining qualities—and one of the coach’s proudest takeaways from the season.
A Senior Class to Remember
While several younger players made headlines, it was the Class of 2025 that provided the emotional and leadership backbone of the team. Through every game, training session, and challenge, the seniors poured their hearts into the program.
“Their commitment and obvious desire to be involved with the team was unmatched,” Ireland said. “The emotion at the end of the season was a testament to that.”
Their impact will not only be remembered on the scoreboard—but in the tone and example they set for the younger players who will carry the mantle forward.
The Future is Bright
Though the season ended in heartbreak with a NorCal semifinal loss in a penalty shootout, the Knights leave the field with more to look forward to than to regret.
Coach Ireland is already optimistic about the road ahead. The program returns a deep and experienced core, with players who have already shown they can compete at the highest level.
“This team has the depth to match this year’s success,” he said. “Everyone is excited already.”
What’s Next?
With high school sports’ built-in offseason limitations, Menlo doesn’t have many formal training opportunities until November. Still, the foundation has been laid for another competitive campaign.
The focus for next season? Staying healthy and building on the enthusiasm and chemistry that powered this year’s run.
“There isn’t much we can do in the offseason,” Ireland admitted. “But hopefully a healthy and equally committed and enthusiastic team will return in November.”
Final Thoughts
The 2025 Menlo Girls Soccer season will be remembered not just for the wins, but for the character the team displayed throughout. From creative brilliance and clutch performances to resilience in the face of adversity, this team gave everything.
Their journey—marked by leadership, emotional moments, and next-level commitment—was a reminder of what high school athletics are all about. And while the season ends in bittersweet fashion, the legacy of this team and the promise of the next one are very much intact.
For those interested in individual statistics, match reports, and further insights, Coach Ireland indicated they will be available soon through internal sources.
As winter gives way to spring, one thing is certain: The Knights will be back.
