Milford Mill Academy Boys varsity basketball Season Preview

The 2024–25 season was memorable for Milford Mill Academy’s boys' varsity basketball team. Under the leadership of Head Coach Ryan Smith, the squad battled adversity with grit and determination, capturing back-to-back regional championships and advancing to the 3A state semifinals—all while finishing the season with just seven players. “It was truly a team effort,” said Coach Smith, who credited the team’s resilience and unity throughout a challenging season. While standout performances came from key contributors like Akeem Belvin and Kendall Loggins Jr., it was the overall commitment from the roster that drove the team’s success. Key Contributors & Breakout Players Belvin and Loggins Jr. were at the heart of the team’s success, with Loggins Jr. stepping into the point guard role and providing crucial leadership down the stretch. Meanwhile, players like James Gamble, Cameron Johnson, and Elijah West rose to the occasion when the team faced injuries and academic setbacks. “We saw these guys step up and grow into bigger roles,” Smith noted. “They answered the call when we needed them most.” Defining Moments One of the pivotal shifts of the season came when the team collectively embraced a stronger defensive mentality. That, paired with Loggins Jr. taking over point guard duties, sparked a new level of chemistry and competitiveness. Handling Adversity Milford Mill’s composure in pressure situations shone through despite a shortened bench. “Our guys are used to playing in big games,” Smith said. “We make sure our schedule prepares them for the playoffs.” Senior Leadership This year’s senior class, led by Kendall Loggins Jr. and Harold Little, played a major role in keeping the team motivated and focused. Remarkably, even underclassman Elijah Johnson stepped up as a vocal leader, reflecting the program’s depth in character and maturity. Looking Ahead Coach Smith is enthusiastic about the future. With seven players returning and new talent set to join, the 2025–26 season promises to build on this year's success. Players like Akeem Belvin and Romeo Hart are expected to elevate their game even further during the offseason. “I’m looking forward to improving our overall team game,” Smith said. “The foundation is strong—we just need to keep building.”
