The 2024–25 season marked a strong comeback for the Mill Creek High School boys basketball team under the leadership of Head Coach Matt Welch. Bouncing back from a challenging previous year, the Hawks finished with a 16-12 record, secured second place in the Region 8-AAAAAA regular season (8-4), and earned a spot in the state playoffs, coming just seconds short of upsetting #1 seed Westlake in the opening round. Key Contributors & Impact Players Junior Braxton Rembert was the cornerstone of the Hawks' success, earning Region Player of the Year honors and leading the team in virtually every statistical category: 14.1 points, 11.3 rebounds, 3.8 blocks, and 2.7 steals per game. His relentless work ethic and two-way dominance set the tone for the entire team. Senior Nick Lolli, an All-Region selection, was the squad’s second-leading scorer (12.8 ppg) and provided crucial leadership and clutch shot-making in tight games. At point guard, Bryce Barracliff, another All-Region Defensive Team honoree, controlled the pace and delivered consistent two-way contributions (8.8 ppg, 4.8 rebs) as the team’s court general. Season Highlights The Hawks' season was defined not only by their on-court performance but also by their off-court excellence. Coach Welch’s proudest accomplishment: a remarkable 3.58 team GPA, reflecting the program's commitment to excellence in the classroom. On the court, Mill Creek battled through 14 games decided in the final two possessions, gaining invaluable experience in high-pressure situations and showing impressive composure throughout the season. Rising Stars & Player Development In addition to the team’s core leaders, several players emerged as key contributors. Sophomore Bryce Jenkins, junior Landon Williams, and senior Braylon Taylor all stepped up in their first significant varsity roles. Their development throughout the season bodes well for the future of the program. Responding to Adversity The team faced its share of injuries both before and during the season, but used those setbacks to build resilience and mental toughness. That adversity ultimately brought the group closer together and sharpened their focus down the stretch. Senior Leadership & Program Culture Mill Creek’s six seniors left an enduring impact on the program. Their leadership, energy, and relentless dedication helped establish a positive culture that will serve as a foundation for years to come. As Coach Welch noted, “We are a better program because of their contributions.” Looking Ahead With key returners like Rembert and a hungry group of underclassmen ready to step into larger roles, the future looks bright for Mill Creek basketball. Coach Welch is eager to build on this year’s success, improve team chemistry, and continue sharpening both sides of the ball. “We always strive to get bigger, faster, and stronger,” he said. “If our mindset stays focused on growth, and we remain hungry and coachable, the future will be a lot of fun.” Stats Team and individual statistics can be found on MaxPreps.
