The Mira Costa girls' lacrosse team is gearing up for an exciting season ahead. With a perfect balance of upperclassmen and freshmen, the team is looking to make a strong statement this year under the leadership of Head Coach Maddy Morrissey. In an exclusive interview, Coach Morrissey shares her insights on the team's composition, goals for the season, and challenges they may face. When asked about the team's dynamic, Coach Morrissey immediately highlights the team's balance of experienced and new players. She believes that this mix is key to their success. The team has a group of juniors who are already playing at a high level, including midfielder Kate Donnelley, known for her athleticism and leadership. Junior Lizzie Witherell is another standout player, described as the "scrappiest" and a "ground ball queen." The team will also be counting on quarterback of the offense, Bailey Brown, to take on a bigger leadership role this season. And let's not forget senior Jillian Rodrigues, the anchor of the defensive unit, who is poised for a great senior season. But it's not just the juniors and seniors who will be making an impact for the team this year. Three talented freshmen, goalie Piper Dalsemer, lefty attacker Emma Barrows, and midfielder Peyton Malone, have also been making waves during practices. According to Coach Morrissey, these freshmen have been working hard and have the potential to make a significant contribution to the team's success. As for team leadership, Coach Morrissey explains that the captains are chosen by the girls themselves. This process not only allows for a fair selection but also fosters a strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork within the team. This year, the captains are all seniors, with Margot Powell, Jillian Rodrigues, and Sophia Delino leading the charge. Each of these captains brings their unique strengths to the team, with Powell's positivity and vocal leadership, Rodrigues' work ethic and dedication, and Delino's clutch performance in high-pressure games. When asked about the team's goals for the season, Coach Morrissey expresses her desire to see the team reach its full potential. She wants the team to continuously improve and reach their peak performance level by April, just in time for the CIF playoffs. The ultimate goal is to win the Bay League and make it to Championship weekend, showcasing the team's hard work and determination on the field.
