The Mission Viejo High School water polo team has high hopes for the upcoming season. With a strong returning core and some promising new players, they have their sights set on a deep run in the CIF playoffs.
We had the opportunity to speak with Coach George Gomez about the team's outlook and goals for the season, as well as his coaching style and strategies. One of the biggest strengths for the Mission Viejo water polo team this year is their top returning players. Coach Gomez highlighted the following as key players to watch:
- Gavin Gomez: A senior and team MVP from last year, Gavin is entering his fourth year on the team. He has played water polo with a club since he was 8 years old and has a deep understanding of the game.
- Blake Skidmore: Another senior returning starter, Blake is known for his strong drive to excel in everything he does.
- Blake Scherbath: A four-time letterman and senior, Blake is a skilled perimeter shooter.
- Vincent Dal Porto: A junior who has been on varsity since his freshman year, Vincent is stepping up as a leader on the team this year.
- Davin Julian: A sophomore in his second year on varsity, Davin is a club water polo player who brings valuable experience to the team.
- Colton Kerr: A senior and three-time letterman, Colton is known for his exceptional blocking skills as the team's goalkeeper. These returning players have a strong foundation of experience and understanding of the game, which makes them a formidable force on the field.
In addition to their skills and abilities, they also bring leadership and drive to the team. As for new players, Coach Gomez highlighted Eli Gomez as one to watch. Fresh off assisting his club team to a ninth-place finish in the recent Junior Olympics, Eli is a freshman looking to make an immediate impact on the team. Similar to his brother Gavin, Eli has been playing water polo since a young age and has a passion for the sport.
When it comes to team captains, Coach Gomez looks for players who possess qualities such as leadership, commitment, and a strong work ethic. This year, the team has two captains:
- Gavin Gomez: After being a leader on the team since his sophomore year, Gavin is now stepping into the captain role for the first time.
- Vincent Dal Porto: As a leader on the team since his freshman year, Vincent is also taking on the role of captain this year.
