As Coach Miriam Gardner gears up for another season at Mission Vista High School, she has a lot to look forward to and a few challenges to overcome. After a successful year with the previous season's players, Coach Gardner is excited to welcome a new group of players who are eager to make an impact on the court. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Gardner quickly points out Morgan Duse-Anthony and Claire Liepa for the girls' team, and Cody Krohn, Robert Hege, and EJ Catagang for the boys' team. Each player brings unique talents and skills to the game, making them vital pieces of the team's success. Morgan Duse-Anthony stands out for her sharp defensive skills and strong offensive presence, while Claire Liepa provides exceptional leadership and defensive play. Cody Krohn is praised for his remarkable setting skills and prowess as a hitter, Robert Hege for his experience and ambition, and EJ Catagang for his role as a defensive specialist and backup setter. As for the new players, Coach Gardner is confident that they will make an immediate impact on the team. In the girls' program, standout additions include Sammy Martin and Maya Hopkins. Sammy brings integrity and passion to the team, along with a deep understanding and execution of both offense and defense. Maya, as the only freshman on the varsity team, adds a dynamic skill set and strong chemistry with the veteran players. On the boys' side, Coach Gardner is excited to see the contributions of rising talents who are still competing for positions on the team. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Gardner values maturity, personality, and leadership. This year, the girls' team will be led by Claire Liepa and Erity Jones, with a battle for the third captain position between Sara Dukes and Morgan Duse-Anthony. On the boys' team, Cody Krohn and Robert Hege will take on leadership roles, with Tillman Rexrode and Merrick Swenson competing for the third captain spot if needed. Coach Gardner believes that team chemistry and camaraderie are crucial for success on the court. To build these bonds, she encourages team gatherings and emphasizes the importance of understanding each other's roles and pushing each other to improve. As for challenges, Coach Gardner admits that identifying the strongest rotation and game plan for a new group of varsity players can be difficult.
