Offseason Focus: Strength and Team Chemistry The Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) football program has zeroed in on strength and conditioning this offseason. With the physical nature of 8-man football, the Eagles have intensified their training, incorporating power lifts, agility circuits, and high-intensity interval sessions. Beyond fitness, the team is focusing on improving on-field communication and building tighter connections between players to ensure cohesive, strategic execution come game time. Coaching Staff and Leadership Changes Returning to the sidelines is Assistant Coach Joell Dixon, now entering his second season as Offensive Coordinator. His creative offensive mind continues to bring fresh energy to the program. The team also bids farewell to several seniors, including standout quarterback Pax Holcomb, whose leadership and playmaking ability will be missed. But the coaching staff is optimistic, believing younger players are ready to rise to the occasion. Players to Watch in 2025 Shadon McLaughlin (Junior, RB/LB): A two-way threat who’s transformed in the weight room and dramatically increased his speed. Calvin Traina (Junior, LB): The team’s defensive anchor and captain, leading in tackles the past two seasons. Anakin Kuhuns (Sophomore, OL/DL): A rising presence in the trenches, dominating strength sessions and showing real leadership promise. These athletes are expected to lead the charge and set the tone for a competitive season ahead. Training Approach: Built for 8-Man Football Understanding the quick pace and physical demands of the 8-man game, the Eagles have developed a specialized training program. Key lifts like power cleans, squats, and deadlifts are paired with agility, plyometric, and circuit-based workouts. The goal? Build strong, durable, and explosive athletes ready to compete on both sides of the ball. Strategic Growth and Coaching Vision Now in his second year at the helm, Head Coach Joe Conard and his staff are retooling their game plan. Through deep film analysis and offseason planning, they’ve honed strategies that fit their unique roster and the 8-man style. Expect a more adaptive, player-focused approach this fall. Fan Engagement: The “9th Man” Movement Taking a page from Texas A&M’s “12th Man” tradition, MSSD has launched its own “9th Man” initiative — celebrating the support of fans and community. The cheerleading squad plays a big role on game days, while the players stay involved off the field through school events, volunteer work, and charity drives. The team has also boosted its presence online, helping fans follow their journey and contribute through fundraising efforts. Looking Ahead: Challenges and Goals Replacing a standout senior class and developing depth will be key challenges for the Eagles. With a limited roster, staying healthy and getting younger players up to varsity speed are top priorities. Still, the culture being built — one of hard work, unity, and belief — gives the team plenty to be excited about. Conclusion: Ready to Soar As the new season approaches, MSSD Football is charging forward with strength, strategy, and spirit. With a dedicated staff, emerging stars, and growing community support, the Eagles are aiming high for 2025 and are ready to leave their mark.
