As the new track and field season approaches, the Mount Greylock Regional High School team is gearing up for what looks to be another successful year. We had the opportunity to speak with Coach Brian Gill about the team and what we can expect to see from them this season. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Gill emphasized the importance of focusing on process goals rather than outcome goals. He believes that the team can only control how good they can be, not how good anyone else will be. This mindset has been instilled in the team and is evident in their consistent goal of practicing every day like a championship team. Another consistent goal for the team is to perform at their best during championship meets. Coach Gill shared that the team is fortunate to have several girls who have already performed at the state level, including senior Katherine Goss who was the league MVP, placed 2nd in the D6 States for 100H and TJ, senior Chase Hoey who was the league field MVP and placed 2nd in the D6 States for HJ, and junior Nora Lopez who holds the school record and placed 2nd in the D6 State for Javelin. These returning players are expected to make a significant impact on the team this season. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Gill looks for players who exemplify the core values of the team: servant leadership, self-sacrifice, drive for excellence, and being a good role model. Performance is not the sole factor considered for captaincy. This year's captains are Katherine Goss, Chase Hoey, and Vera de Jong. In addition to these captains, several younger players such as Rowan Apotsos, Brenna Lopez, Kiera Kristensen, Coralea Lash-St. John and Josie Bay are expected to provide a boost to the team this season. Team chemistry and camaraderie are essential for a successful team, and Coach Gill has a four-part system in place to foster these qualities. The team trains together, eats together, serves the community together, and competes for each other. This bond and support for one another drives the team to push themselves to their full potential. When asked about the challenges in preparing for this season, Coach Gill expressed that the team doesn't see it as a challenge but rather an opportunity to compete for each other and the team. They see it as a privilege to do so. The team's schedule for this season includes a few more invites to start off the season and then one meeting per week during the heart of the competition season. Coach Gill believes that this year's schedule is well-balanced and will prepare the team for tough opponents in the future. In terms of coaching style, Coach Gill shared that his energy and focus for the team remain consistent every season. He believes that this approach helps the team stay focused and motivated. While the mental aspect of the game is not a major focus for the team, Coach Gill emphasized the importance of competing for each other emotionally. He believes that caring for each other and the team is crucial for the team to perform wholeheartedly. As for changes or improvements in the training and conditioning program, Coach Gill shared that there haven't been any significant changes. However, the team is always looking for ways to improve and push themselves to be better athletes. When asked about the team's strengths and weaknesses, Coach Gill replied, "Same as always." This shows that the team has a strong foundation and continues to build on their strengths and improve their weaknesses year after year. In terms of coaching philosophy, Coach Gill stated that it's not about him, but rather about the team and their journey. He believes that his job is to support and guide the team to reach their full potential, both on and off the track. In conclusion, the Mount Greylock Regional High School track and field team is a well-rounded and driven group of athletes. With a focus on process goals, a strong bond between teammates, and the guidance of Coach Gill, the team is ready to tackle the upcoming season. Their consistent goal of being at their best during championship moments and competing for each other will undoubtedly lead to another successful year for Mount Greylock Regional High School.
