Following a remarkable campaign that brought them to the brink of a state title, the Ocean Springs High School volleyball program is back at work—stronger, faster, and more determined than ever. Head Coach Christina Daigle and her Greyhounds are using every minute of the offseason to build upon last year’s success and chase history again in 2025. Offseason Focus: Strength First, Then Skills Coach Daigle has made it clear—this offseason is all about power and speed. Rather than focusing solely on extra reps with the ball, she’s pushed her team into the weight room to build strength and prevent injury. “We had a great season,” Daigle said. “Now, it’s about addressing our shortcomings and gaining an edge. The girls have completely bought in, and that’s exciting to see.” Summer Playdates and Early Competition Ocean Springs will open its summer campaign with their traditional trip to Foley, Alabama, for an early playdate that’s become a key moment in their preseason. The event not only pits them against tough opponents but also offers the team its first chance to gel off the court. “That trip is huge for us,” said Daigle. “It sets the tone. It’s our first ‘varsity trip’ of the year, so it’s great for bonding—and for showing us exactly where we need to improve before the season kicks off.” Changing of the Guard With several seniors graduating, the Greyhounds face a mix of challenges and opportunities. But Coach Daigle isn’t starting from scratch—eight varsity players are returning, providing a solid core of experience. Additionally, new support staff members are joining the program, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to the team. Players to Watch: Senior Stars Ready to Shine This season, Ocean Springs will lean heavily on a strong senior class: Anna Hoffmayer (MB) has been a force since her freshman year and is poised for a standout final season. Lilly Rutland (OH) brings consistency and leadership on the offensive end, with deep varsity experience. River Schmidt (L) brings infectious energy to the court and will be a key defensive anchor and vocal leader this season. “These seniors know what’s at stake,” said Daigle. “They’re ready to lead.” Smart Training: Injury Prevention and Performance The offseason program isn’t just about lifting heavy—it’s about lifting smart. Injury prevention is a key focus, with an emphasis on proper form and technique. “This program has kept our girls healthy and performing at their best,” Daigle explained. “It’s been a difference-maker over the past few years.” Nutrition: Fueling Success While formal programs are a challenge at the high school level, Coach Daigle makes nutrition a constant point of discussion. She encourages her athletes to fuel their bodies with nutrient-dense foods and lead by example in making healthy choices. “A proper nutrition plan is a game-changer,” she said. “It’s something I strongly believe in.” Coaching Approach: Discipline, Hustle, and Adaptability With a few new coaches joining the staff, the program is maintaining its core values: discipline, hustle, and a culture of positivity mixed with competitiveness. While no major strategic shifts are expected, Coach Daigle emphasizes adaptability based on the unique strengths and challenges of this year’s squad. “Every season is different,” she said. “We stay flexible, but our standards never change.” A Town Behind Them The support for Ocean Springs Volleyball is stronger than ever. After last season’s success, the local rec league saw record numbers, and the team continues to be a source of pride for the community. “Seeing young girls front row at our games, fully invested in our team—it means everything,” Daigle said. “They are the future, and their enthusiasm drives us.” The Challenge Ahead: Breaking Through the Ceiling Having come agonizingly close to their first state championship, the Greyhounds now face the toughest mental battle—believing they can finish the job. “Our biggest challenge is overcoming the doubt,” said Daigle. “Once we break through and get that first championship, I truly believe there will be no stopping this program.” With a driven senior class, an energized coaching staff, and an entire town behind them, Ocean Springs is ready to write a new chapter—and this one could end with a trophy.
