It's that time of year again - wrestling season is upon us and the team at Patriot High School is ready to make their mark. With a talented group of returning players and some promising newcomers, Coach Terry Villegas is focused on leading the team to success. In this article, we will take a closer look at the team's goals, strengths, weaknesses, and strategies for the upcoming season.
One of the team's biggest strengths this year is their top returning players. These players include Max Martinez (113 lbs.), and Zyara Torres (116 lbs.) Jacob Rios (120/126 lbs.), Apollo Violette (145 lbs.), Julian Diaz (150 lbs.) Omar Galiza (160 lbs.), Issac Galiza (195lbs.), Khan Dong (220 lbs.), and Kenzo Dong (Hvy Wt.). Each of these players has experience, leadership qualities, and a strong desire to do well.
What makes them stand out is their commitment to the team and their dedication to improving every day. In addition to these returning players, there are also some new faces on the team who are expected to make an immediate impact. Coach Villegas is excited about Jonathan Mujica, a senior transfer with three years of varsity wrestling experience.
His great attitude and hard work make him a valuable addition to the team. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Villegas looks for qualities such as the ability to be heard and lead, as well as demonstrating a positive attitude, good character, discipline, and a strong work ethic. Max Martinez and Julian Diaz, along with Zyara Torres for the girls' team, are likely to fill this role.
To establish team chemistry and camaraderie, the team will participate in fundraisers and attend wrestling tournaments together. The team also has the opportunity to learn from a nearby Division 1 wrestling program, with coaches coming in to run clinics and inviting the team to their camps and dual matches. This not only helps improve the team's skills but also brings them closer together and creates a sense of unity.
When it comes to motivating the players to reach their full potential, Coach Villegas relies on a combination of team activities and individual goals. By attending tournaments together and participating in fundraising events, the team bonds and pushes each other to be their best.
