As Coach Felipe Lara emphasizes, the goal for the Patuxent High School Cross Country team is to have a healthy and competitive season. The team may be small and young compared to others in the state, but they have a unique bond in their close-knit town of Lusby, MD. With a focus on consistency, self-discipline, and having fun as a team, Coach Lara believes that the team will achieve success this season. In terms of top returning players, senior and boys' team captain Brett Sheranko stands out as a leader on and off the field. Intending to run for the Naval Academy next year, he has shown dedication and hard work throughout his high school career. Similarly, senior and girls' team captain Devan Humphreys has proven to be a strong runner with a lot of heart. Another senior, Hope Hall, is expected to make an impact on the girls' team with her consistent training and strength on the trails. Sophomore D'neri Lara and junior Darius Butler are also key players to watch out for on the team, as they possess the drive and determination to succeed. Team chemistry and camaraderie are essential for any successful team, and Coach Lara uses various methods to build these qualities within the Patuxent High School Cross Country team. From running together on uneven terrain to participating in invitationals and scrimmages, the team learns to push through adversity and grow stronger together. Coach Lara also believes in pushing the players out of their comfort zones and challenging them to embrace the "suck," as it leads to growth and self-motivation. In terms of training and conditioning, the team has incorporated weight training into their program this year. This will not only help with injury prevention but also with building strength and stamina for long and challenging runs. Additionally, Coach Lara has a specific race plan for each runner and focuses on mental toughness training to help the team overcome any obstacles during races. As with any team, some strengths and weaknesses need to be addressed. The team's strength lies in their close-knit bond and consistency in training. However, Coach Lara recognizes the need to improve injury prevention and mental toughness. This is where the team's weight training and focus on mental toughness will come into play. Coach Lara is optimistic that with these adjustments, the team will have a successful season.
