Pelham Hornets Softball: Focused, Fundamentals-First Approach Fuels Offseason
Back to Basics: Offseason Grounded in Conditioning and Fundamentals
For the Pelham Hornets softball program, this offseason is all about intentionality. From conditioning to batting reps, the team is refocusing on the core skills that build confident, competitive athletes.
“We’re getting the girls back to basic ball and being more deliberate in how we practice and play,” said Head Coach Cathe Hoskins. “It’s about building strong habits now that will pay off in pressure moments.”
Summer Action: Tournaments, Youth Camps & More
The team plans to stay active over the summer, including:
Hosting a Round Robin Tournament in Pelham
Traveling to Thomas University for summer competition
Running a Youth Camp, which doubles as a team bonding opportunity and a way to reinforce fundamentals
“These events give our girls the reps and team chemistry they need to hit the ground running,” Hoskins said.
Roster Update: Saying Goodbye, Welcoming the Future
The Hornets graduated just one senior last season, but her impact was significant—an All-Region performer and vocal leader since her freshman year. Despite her absence, the team is optimistic about a promising incoming freshman class.
Players to Watch: Versatility, Speed, and Leadership Shine
A strong group of seniors headlines this year’s squad, bringing maturity and leadership to the field. Key returning players include:
Mylaisha Almond – A true utility player and track standout, Mylaisha brings elite speed and agility that will be a weapon on the bases.
Kaitlyn Tyson – A 3rd-year starting 1st baseman, anchoring the infield.
Abigail Jones – A versatile athlete expected to contribute across multiple positions.
Christen Davis – A key returner and starting centerfielder with strong range and field awareness.
“We’re excited about our depth and field coverage this year,” said Hoskins.
Strength & Injury Prevention: A Modern Training Mindset
Working with school athletic trainer Luke McCarthy, the team has implemented a dynamic and engaging training plan aimed at injury prevention and overall fitness.
“It’s more than just running drills. It’s about keeping our athletes healthy, interested, and competitive all year long,” Hoskins noted.
Program Development: New Coaches, Stronger Pipeline
With a few coaching staff updates, the Hornets are setting a foundation for long-term success:
Coach Bobby Hoskins will assist with Varsity and serve as Head Coach of the JV team
Head Coach Cathe Hoskins remains the Varsity Head Coach and will assist with JV
Coach Krystain Jones and Coach Teresa “Dale” Elmore will guide the Middle School program
“With so many athletes coming in without a lot of game experience, these changes allow us to start developing our future Hornets from day one,” said Coach Hoskins.
Community Spirit: Hornet Nation Has Each Other’s Back
The Pelham softball team is tightly woven into the Hornet Nation community. Whether it’s attending football, basketball, or track events—or cheering at FCA meetings—the players understand the importance of showing up for each other.
“It’s more than just a team—it’s a family,” said Hoskins. “That support is something special.”
Biggest Challenge: Turning Inexperience Into Confidence
With seven varsity starters graduated in the last two seasons, the Hornets are young but full of potential. The key will be turning raw talent into consistent performance.
“Our players are capable of more than they realize,” Hoskins said. “This season is about pushing through those self-imposed limits and showing what we’re really made of.”
