Perry High School Girls Wrestling 2025 Season Recap: A Rising Force with Eyes on the Podium
The 2025 winter season marked a turning point for the Perry High School Girls Wrestling team, and at the heart of it all was a group of young, determined athletes building something special. Coach Theresa Dominish, who has been instrumental in nurturing the program, led a team that not only grew in numbers but also grew in confidence and competitiveness. From the grit on the mat to the camaraderie off of it, this past season was a stepping stone toward a bright future for girls wrestling at Perry High.
A Team on the Rise
This season, Perry's girls wrestling team fielded five wrestlers—a more than double increase from the previous season’s roster of just two. That growth alone speaks volumes about the energy around the program. For Coach Dominish, the numbers were only part of the story—the real narrative was about progress, leadership, and personal milestones.
Two wrestlers stood out in a major way: Abby Cornwell (110 lbs) and GG Dominish (105 lbs). Their performances reflected not just natural talent, but months of offseason preparation and focused dedication. Both girls dominated their weight classes throughout the regular season, claiming sectional and district championships.
GG, a freshman, made an immediate impact in her first high school season, finishing with a 42-7 record and a 3rd-place finish at the State Tournament. Abby, with an equally impressive 46-5 record, finished 7th at State, showing her toughness and consistency throughout the year. Together, they led the charge for Perry on the mat—and provided the rest of the team with role models to follow.
Building from the Ground Up
While GG and Abby shined as top performers, the rest of the squad made noticeable strides, too. Eva Kutscher (235 lbs), one of the returning wrestlers, improved significantly from her previous season. She finished with a 26-14 record and was named an alternate for the State Tournament—a strong indicator of how far she’s come.
Meanwhile, Maddy Hedge (170 lbs) and Emily Kutscher (155 lbs) continued to grow as competitors. Maddy finished an even 10-10, while Emily gained valuable experience through her 7-23 season. In wrestling, those early seasons are crucial for development, and Coach Dominish is confident that both girls are poised for big leaps in the next campaign.
What’s just as important as the results on the mat is the culture being built around the team. Despite the sport's challenges—especially at the high school level—the girls stuck together through it all.
“The team is very close,” Coach Dominish noted. “They always rallied around each other, whether it was to cheer on a win or to pick each other up after a loss.”
A Freshman Leader
Perhaps the most exciting development of the season was the emergence of GG Dominish as a natural leader. Despite being a freshman, GG brought a contagious energy and passion to the team that helped lift everyone’s spirits and intensity. Her competitive fire was balanced by a lighthearted personality that made her a fan favorite among her teammates.
“She naturally became a team leader,” said Coach Dominish. “She is very competitive but silly, and the girls loved having her around.”
This blend of leadership, talent, and team spirit could make GG the cornerstone of Perry’s wrestling program for years to come.
Staying Strong Through Setbacks
Unlike many teams that experience bumps in the road, Perry avoided major injuries this season—something Coach Dominish was grateful for. The girls, though, weren’t strangers to the occasional setback. Whether it was a tough loss or a disappointing performance, what set this team apart was its resilience.
“There weren’t really any defining moments,” Dominish said, “but the girls worked hard from start to finish. They each had a few hiccups along the season, but nothing major that held them back.”
Their consistency and refusal to get discouraged proved invaluable as the postseason approached, and will no doubt carry over into offseason training.
Looking Ahead: Strength, Growth, and Goals
Coach Dominish has clear goals for the offseason: strength and conditioning. With all five wrestlers returning, summer workouts in the weight room will be a crucial time to build both physical and mental toughness.
“We will work out together as a team all summer,” she explained. “I’d like to improve on our strength and conditioning.”
The off-season also provides a perfect opportunity for the returning athletes to continue sharpening their technique and endurance—two areas that make a major difference on the mat.
Looking ahead to next year, Perry's girls' wrestling team has all the pieces for a breakout season. GG and Abby return as seasoned state placers with more experience under their belts. Eva, just one spot away from a state appearance, has her eyes on the podium. And Maddy and Emily are ready to take the next step as well.
Coach Dominish’s excitement is evident: “I am very excited to see what next season brings.”
A Program with Momentum
While they may not be the largest team in the state, Perry’s girls wrestling squad is building something meaningful—and fast. With every tournament, practice, and training session, the program continues to gain momentum. It’s clear that the foundation is strong: a passionate coach, talented and committed athletes, and a sense of unity that carries them through tough moments.
As the 2025 season fades into memory, Perry High School can be proud of how far its girls wrestling program has come—and even more excited about where it's headed. With leaders like GG Dominish and Abby Cornwell at the helm, the next few years look like they could include more medals, more memories, and perhaps a few more names on the state championship podium.
