Coach Aaron Duncan is heading into his second season with the Portsmouth High School baseball team and is determined to lead them to success once again. After winning the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) last year and reaching the Elite 8 Regional Final, the team has high expectations for this upcoming season. We sat down with Coach Duncan to discuss the top returning players, new additions to the team, his coaching style, and the team's goals for the season. The Portsmouth High School baseball team has a strong group of returning players who will play a crucial role in the team's success this year. JT Williams, Trevin Brooks, Jacob Roth, Leelind Scurlock, Colin Perry, Malachi Loper, Camron Williams, Nik Copley, and Preston Krebbs are all back and ready to compete. According to Coach Duncan, these players are not only talented on the field but also have a special bond off the field. They are close friends who share a desire to win and represent their school with pride. The team also has some new additions that Coach Duncan believes will make an immediate impact. Braxton Carr, Landon Malone, Kyo Sowards, Reid Click, and Dace Click are all battling for a spot on the team and are highly motivated to contribute to the team's success. When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Duncan looks for players who embody the characteristics of being a good leader. He wants players who lead by example, both on and off the field. This year's captains are JT Williams, Preston Krebbs, Colin Perry, Malachi Loper, Nik Copley, and Kyo Sowards. To build team chemistry and camaraderie, Coach Duncan looks for players who do things the right way, both on and off the field. He also encourages his players to lead by example and to always give their best effort at practice. By creating a positive and hard-working atmosphere, the team can develop strong bonds and push each other to be their best. One of the ways Coach Duncan motivates his players is by setting high expectations and challenging them to maximize their full potential. He also plans on taking the team on a spring training trip to Myrtle Beach, where they will play at the Cal Ripken Experience. This trip will not only be a great opportunity for the team to bond and develop their skills but also a chance to compete against top-level teams. As with any sports team, there are always challenges to overcome. For Coach Duncan and the Portsmouth High School baseball team, their biggest challenge this season has been organizing the spring training trip to Myrtle Beach. There is a lot of planning and logistics involved, but the team is determined to make it a successful and memorable trip. The team has a competitive schedule this season, both in and out of conference. The OVC is a tough conference, and Coach Duncan expects tough competition from teams such as Fairland, Ironton, and South Point. They will also face challenging opponents in their out-of-conference games, including Minford, Valley, Lynchburg Clay, and Boyd County. Coach Duncan's coaching style has not changed much from previous seasons. He believes in setting high expectations and challenging his players to be their best. With a more experienced group this year, he is able to focus on the finer points of the game and work on improving their skills rather than teaching the basics. While physical conditioning is important, Coach Duncan believes that the mental aspect of the game is just as crucial. With a veteran group of players who understand his expectations, he can focus on the mental side of the game and work on developing a winning mindset for the team. Coach Duncan has implemented a training and conditioning program that includes J Band work, Plyo Band work, long tossing, and weightlifting. Many of his players are also involved in football, which gives them a strong foundation in terms of physical conditioning. As with any team, Portsmouth High School has its strengths and weaknesses. Their strengths include experience, with 8 returning starters and 3 returning pitchers, team speed, and strong defense. They also hit over .350 as a team last season. However, their weaknesses include overall depth and the challenge of replacing their top pitcher and two solid hitters from last season. Coach Duncan's coaching philosophy is centered on working hard, having fun, and giving 100% effort at every practice and game. He also believes in setting high expectations for his players and challenging them to reach their full potential. By creating a positive and hard-working atmosphere, he hopes to lead the team to success on and off the field. With a strong group of returning players, talented new additions, and a dedicated coaching staff, the Portsmouth High School baseball team is ready to take on the challenges of the upcoming season. With their eyes set on winning the OVC for the second consecutive year and improving upon last year's tournament success, this team is determined to make their school and community proud.
