As the upcoming football season approaches, the Quartz Hill High School team is gearing up for another exciting and competitive year. With a strong core of returning players and talented new additions, Coach Russell Gordon is determined to lead his team to success. I had the privilege of speaking with Coach Gordon about his team and his plans for the season, and I could feel his enthusiasm and dedication for the sport and his players.
When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Gordon immediately highlighted their key strengths and what they bring to the team. Adoynes Currie (CB) and Jaden Baer (DE) provide a strong defensive presence and are leaders on the field. On the offensive side, Dylan Marchant (QB) and Brody Larry (QB) bring experience and talent, while Jaden Grahm (RB) and Max Gunter (MLB) provide the team with speed and agility.
Larry Baer (LT) is also expected to make a significant impact with his strong blocking skills. What makes these players special, according to Coach Gordon, is their ability to play as a unit and their close bond off the field. In terms of new players, Coach Gordon believes that Naim Bankhead (WR) and Azim Bankhead (RB) will have an immediate impact on the team with their skills and work ethic.
He also mentioned the importance of their core values when choosing team captains, as they must be able to model them and foster healthy conflict. Currently, Naim Bankhead and Azim Bankhead are some of the players who are in the running for the captain role. To build team chemistry and camaraderie this season, Coach Gordon stresses the importance of trust and a family atmosphere.
He focuses on creating a close-knit team that can overcome any adversity they may face on and off the field. He also dedicates a day every week to mental training, emphasizing its significance in the game. When it comes to motivating his players to push themselves to their full potential, Coach Gordon believes in providing them with mentors who can guide and support them.
He also emphasizes the importance of having a daily regimen to help players showcase their abilities. As for challenges in preparing for the season, Coach Gordon mentions the balancing act of managing multiple sport athletes and their schedules, while also keeping their bodies healthy. The team's schedule for this season is looking competitive, and they have a game against Shadow Ridge High School in Las Vegas that they are looking forward to.
