As the lacrosse season approaches, fans and supporters of Redondo Union High School's girls lacrosse team are gearing up for what is expected to be an exciting and successful year. We had the opportunity to speak with Coach Tom Borgia about the team and what we can expect from them this season. The top returning players from last season include 2-time All-American Caitlyn Kelly and offensive force Kate Kenney. What makes these players special is not only their skills but also their high lacrosse IQ and competitive drive. Both players have already committed to Division I schools and are expected to continue to excel and lead the team in the upcoming season. In addition to these returning players, Coach Borgia is also excited about the potential impact of freshman players Mayella Kumprey and Miller Ginsburgh. Mayella's athleticism and ground ball skills on defense, combined with Miller's impressive stick skills and goal-scoring abilities, are sure to make an immediate impact on the team. The competition for team captains is fierce, with 4 captains and 3 seniors who have been starters for 3 years. One of the biggest challenges this season is replacing 8 graduated starters and building chemistry with 17 new players on the varsity team. However, Coach Borgia is confident in his team's ability to adapt and work together to maintain their status as a top team in the league. He also credits the team's new coach, Trenna Hill, for her motivation and leadership in helping the team prepare for the upcoming season. As for the team's training and conditioning program, there have been changes made to incorporate more uptempo drills and utilize the team's speed and athleticism. This, combined with focusing on strong communication and in-game strategies, will be key in building on the team's strengths and improving any weaknesses. The team's schedule looks promising, with games against tough opponents such as Mira Costa, who made it to the final four last year. Coach Borgia's coaching philosophy of playing loose and having fun is reflected in the team's gameplay, with a focus on the next-play attitude and continuous improvement. Communication on the court is crucial for the team's success this season, as they plan to play at a fast-paced level and take advantage of every opportunity on both offense and defense. And while the team strives for excellence on the field, they also excel in academics with 80% of the varsity team taking AP classes.
