Roscommon Girls Basketball 2025 Season Recap: A Resilient Team on the Rise
The 2025 season for the Roscommon Lady Bucks was more than just a successful campaign—it was a statement year. Guided by Head Coach Greg Kauffman, the Lady Bucks posted one of their most memorable seasons in school history, advancing to the Regional Finals for the first time since the 1996–97 season. With a talented roster headlined by elite juniors and a deep supporting cast, Roscommon proved they belong among the best, and with 90% of the team returning, the future looks exceptionally bright.
Star Performers Drive Success
At the heart of Roscommon’s remarkable season were two standouts: Zoey Kauffman and Alexis Carper, both juniors who have been cornerstones of the program since their freshman year.
Zoey Kauffman led the team in nearly every major statistical category: scoring (300 points), assists (84), steals (84), deflections (88), and was second in rebounding (141). Her versatility is unmatched—playing every position except center. Whether posting up, driving to the basket from the wing, or draining shots from beyond the arc, Zoey consistently delivered. A three-time First Team All-Highland Conference selection, she was central to Roscommon winning a second straight District Title and pushing into the Regional Finals.
Alexis Carper, another all-around talent, was just as vital. She finished second on the team in scoring (288 points) and assists (64), led in rebounds (228), and tallied 71 steals. Known for her incredible rebounding instincts—she’s had over 200 rebounds for three consecutive seasons—Alexis expanded her offensive game this year, becoming a more dynamic scorer both in the post and off the dribble. She’s also a two-time First Team All-Conference honoree and was crucial to the team’s postseason success.
Their contributions laid the foundation for a deep tournament run and set the bar high for the future of Roscommon basketball.
Season Overview: Progress and Promise
“I thought the season went well,” said Coach Kauffman. “Could it have been better? Definitely. But I’m extremely proud of what we accomplished.”
The Lady Bucks played with intensity, unity, and hunger. Their journey to the Regional Finals ended a nearly three-decade drought and marked a turning point for the program. While they fell short of winning the regional title, the players’ effort, commitment, and growth throughout the year left a lasting mark.
“They gave great effort all season,” Kauffman said. “Even though it was a successful season, they want more.”
Defining Moments: Redemption and Resilience
No season is without its defining moments, and for the Lady Bucks, a mix of heartbreak and triumph shaped their path.
Late in the season, Roscommon suffered a crushing loss to McBain, falling on a half-court buzzer-beater that knocked them out of the conference title race. But rather than allow the loss to define them, the team bounced back the very next week in a thrilling one-point win over Manton, securing the top seed for Districts.
That momentum carried them through the playoffs. After winning their second consecutive District Title, they faced Evart in the Regional round—a team that had beaten them twice in the regular season. This time, Roscommon flipped the script with a 41–33 victory, advancing to the Regional Finals and avenging their earlier defeats.
Developmental Growth and Rising Stars
While Zoey and Alexis carried a heavy load, the progression of other players made Roscommon a formidable and balanced team.
Kylie Traver, a junior, improved significantly as a shooter and defender. Her development gave the team valuable spacing on offense and tenacity on defense.
Mara Williams, a sophomore point guard, showcased growth in her offensive game. “She’s a good floor general,” said Coach Kauffman. “She’s strong and can get in the paint and finish through contact.” As her outside shooting becomes more consistent, she’s expected to become a dual-threat playmaker.
Nemiah Carper, another sophomore, emerged as the third-leading scorer with 154 points. With height, speed, and agility, Nemiah has shown glimpses of becoming a dominant two-way player. Her improved perimeter shooting and continued post development could elevate her into an elite player next year.
Other important contributors included juniors Aubrey Bunn, Bailey Monroe, and sophomore Cami Hamina—all of whom offered valuable minutes and will be relied upon to bring scoring punch off the bench next season.
Handling Adversity with Maturity
One of the strongest qualities of this year’s Roscommon team was its mental toughness. The Lady Bucks showed poise under pressure, rebounding after tough losses and never dropping back-to-back games.
“We didn’t have any long-term injuries, thankfully,” said Coach Kauffman. “But what really stood out was how the girls responded after setbacks. They always came back focused, and their play elevated.”
This ability to stay composed in tight moments came from experience, preparation, and leadership, especially from the upperclassmen.
The Senior Legacy
While Roscommon’s future lies with its deep junior and sophomore classes, the contributions of seniors Elise Cherven and Haylee Theobald should not be overlooked.
“They were the ultimate team players,” said Kauffman. “They didn’t play a lot, but their energy, effort, and attitude made a huge difference. They came to practice every day with a smile and gave everything they had when called upon.”
Their leadership helped create a culture of unity and positivity—one that will live on in the players they helped mentor.
Looking Ahead: The Future Is Bright
With 90% of the roster returning, expectations for the 2026 season are soaring. The Lady Bucks are set to enter next year with depth, talent, and experience—a rare combination for any program.
“It’s not often you have a season like this and return almost everyone,” said Kauffman. “We’re excited. The bar has been raised.”
The goals are clear: win the conference, repeat as District champions, and push beyond the Regional Finals toward a potential state title run.
Offseason Focus: Mastering the Fundamentals
Despite the talent on the roster, Coach Kauffman remains grounded in his approach: get better at the basics.
“When you go deep in the tournament, it’s the team that does the little things best that wins,” he said. “We’ll continue to work on ball handling, passing, footwork, defense, communication, and of course, shooting.”
With a strong foundation already in place, the Lady Bucks are focused on sharpening every detail of their game to maximize their postseason potential.
