As we look ahead to the upcoming volleyball season, the energy around the St. Stephens High School program is one of focus, growth, and excitement. Our team has been working hard this offseason with several priorities in mind to ensure we're ready to compete at a high level and foster a positive, unified team culture.
Offseason Focus
This offseason, our main focus has been on improving consistency in fundamentals while elevating our mental toughness. We’ve emphasized refining key techniques—particularly serve-receive, communication, and court coverage. In addition, we’re developing younger athletes to step into bigger roles as we look to replace key graduates from last season.
Special Offseason Events
To build team chemistry and sharpen our skills, we’re attending multiple summer camps and team bonding events. These include a team skills camp in June at Appalachian State University and a competitive team camp in July hosted locally with area programs. These opportunities not only raise our level of play but also allow our girls to connect off the court.
Notable Additions & Departures
We graduated several impact players, which opens the door for new leaders to emerge. While losing experienced seniors is always a challenge, we’re excited about the athleticism and drive of our returning roster and incoming underclassmen. Our coaching staff remains intact, allowing for continuity as we build on last year’s progress.
Players to Watch
Keep an eye on Ava Thompson, a returning junior setter who brings strong leadership and court vision. Sophomore outside hitter Layla Perez has shown tremendous growth in the offseason and could have a breakout year. Meanwhile, freshman middle blocker Riley James is turning heads with her work ethic and power at the net. These athletes, along with many others, have committed to offseason workouts and extra reps that are already paying off.
Weight Lifting & Fitness
Our offseason training program emphasizes strength, agility, and injury prevention. We incorporate plyometric training and resistance circuits to build explosiveness, as well as yoga-based flexibility sessions. Team-building hikes and competitive fitness challenges have also brought a fun and motivational dynamic to training.
Nutrition
While we don’t have a formal nutrition program, we regularly talk with our players about the importance of fueling their bodies for performance. We emphasize hydration, balanced meals, and smart recovery habits throughout the year.
Coaching Perspective
As coaches, we’ve been reviewing game film, attending clinics, and networking with other programs to bring fresh ideas to our practice plans. This season, we’re implementing faster offensive sets and encouraging more aggressive serving. We’re also placing a big emphasis on accountability and communication as cornerstones of our team culture.
Fan Engagement & Community Impact
Our program has a strong following, and we’re proud of the support we receive from families and the St. Stephens community. This offseason, our players have helped run youth clinics and volunteered at local school events. These moments help younger athletes connect with our team and build future program pride.
Biggest Challenges Ahead
The biggest challenge this year will be blending returning leadership with new talent and finding the right rhythm early in the season. We’ll need to stay mentally tough through growing pains, but the hunger and commitment in this group give us confidence that we’re on the right track.
