As the start of the high school basketball season approaches, fans and supporters of Salesian College Preparatory are eager to see what the team has in store. With a mix of new and returning players, the Salesian Pride is ready to make its mark on the court. Head Coach Stephen Pezzola has been preparing for this season with a combination of experienced players and fresh talent. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Pezzola mentions the team's goal of playing deep in the State Tournament. And with three returning starters, the potential for success is high. Leading the team this year are captains Janiya Sawyer and Jamia Sawyer. Coach Pezzola describes their leadership as key, and their passion for the game sets a great example for the rest of the team. Another player to watch is Oriannah Birden, who came on strong at the end of her freshman year and is expected to have a big impact on the team this season. When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Pezzola looks for players with exceptional leadership qualities and a positive attitude. Along with the two senior captains, Vanessa Parilla is expected to make a big impact on the team after a sit-out period at the point guard spot. Freshmen Emma Bryant and Naomi Young are also set to join the team and bring their unique skills and contributions. In order to build chemistry and camaraderie amongst the team, Coach Pezzola stresses the importance of teamwork and encouraging each other. Throughout their conditioning season, the players spent time together outside of practice, attending other school sporting events and even the school's Fall Play. This bond not only helps with team chemistry but also creates a supportive and motivating environment for the players to push themselves to their full potential. As with any season, there have been challenges in preparing the team for the year ahead. With new players on the team, Coach Pezzola focuses on helping them adapt to the program and be the best teammates they can be. The tough schedule, which includes top teams such as Clovis West, Carondelet, and Bishop O'Dowd, also presents its challenges. However, the team is motivated and always ready to take on these tough opponents. When it comes to the mental aspect of the game, Coach Pezzola emphasizes the importance of being mentally tough and resilient. This is something that the team strives for and works on throughout the season.
