The San Jacinto Valley Academy girls' basketball team is gearing up for another exciting season. After a successful previous season, the team is motivated and determined to build on their achievements. Coach Sarina Johnson is leading the team this year, and she is ready to face the challenges that come with being a coach. In an exclusive interview, she shares her insights on the preparations for this season, how to balance academics and sports, and her final message for the team's supporters.
Preparation is a crucial aspect for any sports team, and the San Jacinto Valley Academy is no exception. As Coach Johnson explains, one of the biggest challenges in preparing for this season has been pushing her players to give their best. She believes in challenging her players and pushing them out of their comfort zones.
Coach Johnson says, "I yell at them. I was always told that if the Coach isn't speaking to you then there is a problem. When a Coach is yelling at you, that means they believe in you and they see you aren't giving it your all." This shows her commitment to helping her players reach their full potential and achieve their goals. Another challenge that the team faces is balancing academics and sports.
Being student-athletes, the players need to maintain a balance between their academic responsibilities and their sports commitments. Coach Johnson emphasizes the importance of communication on and off the court. She says, "Communication is KEY when you are on the court. It's very important, especially if one of your teammates has beat you down the court.
They have the opportunity to see the court and let you know who they are guarding and who they will have to guard is top-tier communication." This highlights the significance of effective communication within the team, which helps in maintaining a balance between academics and sports. Without proper communication, the team may face difficulties in keeping up with both their studies and their performance on the court.
At San Jacinto Valley Academy, academics are a top priority alongside sports. Coach Johnson explains the school's commitment to academic excellence by saying, "At SJVA, if a student even reaches a D, they have Enrichment where students need to go after school. They will be in there until that grade has been raised. That is one thing I love about our school. They are very academically oriented." This shows that the school not only focuses on sports but also their students' overall academic growth and success.
