Phoenix, AZ – With momentum growing behind girls' flag football across Arizona, the Sandra Day O’Connor High School Eagles are stepping into the 2025 season with clear direction, strong returning leadership, and a deep commitment to the fundamentals. Under the guidance of longtime Head Coach Robert Latona, the Eagles are building from the ground up, focusing on football IQ, game fundamentals, and physical conditioning. Offseason Priorities: Sharpening Skills and Speed Coach Latona shared that the team’s offseason focus has been rooted in improving football understanding and mastering fundamentals. “We’re really working on grasping the nuances of the game—along with improving speed, quickness, and strength in the weight room,” said Latona. Players are hitting the field four days a week this summer, even before their strength training sessions begin. This balance of on-field development and structured lifting sets a strong tone for what lies ahead. Summer Competition & Events The Eagles will stay sharp and engaged through summer round-robin games and are preparing to compete in the “Make Your Mark” Tournament in Mesa, Arizona, during the season—an event that promises strong competition and great exposure for the squad. Roster Update: Experience Returns While the coaching staff remains intact, with multiple members holding over 35 years of combined experience, the team will return a strong core: six starters on defense and five on offense. This continuity is expected to be a major advantage in a growing and competitive sport. Players to Watch Coach Latona highlighted a handful of key returners expected to play pivotal roles in the upcoming season: Becky Currence Ava Hanosh Bella Wolf Taylor Kunz Kylie Pruitt Each brings valuable experience and leadership to the field. Additionally, the Eagles are excited to welcome Keygan Robinson, whose speed and agility will add a new spark to the roster. Strength & Conditioning Led by Logan Bayus, the Eagles' summer strength program emphasizes full-body athleticism. “We’re training with purpose—explosiveness, speed, and injury prevention are top priorities,” said Latona. Off-field, players are also receiving regular nutrition and recovery guidance to support year-round performance. Coaching Consistency & Philosophy With a staff that has coached together for years, the Eagles benefit from cohesive leadership and deep experience. The team’s approach remains rooted in structure, accountability, and growth. “We work extremely well together as a staff. There’s a strong trust and understanding in how we prepare these athletes,” Latona noted. Community Connections Off the field, the Eagles are investing in the next generation of players by hosting youth camps for young girls throughout the summer. Social media is also helping fans stay connected with offseason updates, athlete highlights, and upcoming events. Looking Ahead: Fundamental Focus When asked about the team’s biggest challenges for 2025, Coach Latona kept it straightforward: “It all comes down to fundamentals—throwing, catching, executing.” With a strong foundation and focused summer, O’Connor is poised to rise as a serious contender in the Arizona girls' flag football scene.
