Scripps Ranch High School Wrestling 2025 Winter Season Recap: Building a Legacy of Grit, Growth, and Teamwork
As the 2024-2025 wrestling season wrapped up at Scripps Ranch High School, Head Coach Justin Viramontes reflected on a year of remarkable growth, resilience, and rising talent in the girls wrestling program. With only nine girls on the roster—three seniors and three freshmen—the team faced challenges head-on, forging a culture of mentorship, hard work, and undeniable progress.
Here’s a deep dive into a season that showcased not just wins and losses, but the building blocks of a legacy.
Mentorship and Teamwork: The Heart of the Season
One of the most inspiring narratives this season was the mentorship bond between the senior wrestlers and the freshmen. Seniors Hope Long (100 lbs), Chloe Ng (110 lbs), and Analiese (135 lbs) embraced their roles as leaders and mentors for the young freshmen—Malia Kollmeyer (105 lbs), Soren Mendoza (115 lbs), and Leia Meza (145 lbs).
Coach Viramontes highlighted this dynamic as a defining strength:
“The passion these seniors brought for the sport and the growth needed to excel was infectious. You could clearly see the underclasswomen absorb what was passed to them and rise up.”
Hope Long finished the season as the City Conference Champion and qualified as an alternate for the State Tournament. Despite some tough breaks at the CIF tournament, Hope’s perseverance earned her the team MVP award.
Chloe Ng, also crowned a city champion, made a deep run at the Masters Tournament and was honored with the Girls Team Falcon Award—given to the hardest working person in the room.
Freshman Malia Kollmeyer made waves with a stunning debut season: she was the City Conference Champion, CIF Division II Champion, and advanced deep into the Masters Tournament. Her outstanding performance earned her Girls Team Rookie of the Year.
Season Overview: Triumphs Amidst Trials
Coach Viramontes described the season as “very well overall,” despite never having a full lineup. The team placed in the top four at half of the tournaments they entered—a remarkable feat considering their limited numbers.
Every season presents mental challenges, he explained, and this year was no different. Some matches took a toll on the wrestlers’ confidence, yet the team consistently demonstrated growth and resilience. The mental toughness forged through these struggles was “phenomenal to witness.”
The season’s pinnacle was the City Championship, where only six girls competed, yet five placed—and three clinched first place. Despite competing with fewer athletes than a full roster of 14, Scripps Ranch took a formidable 3rd place out of 19 teams.
Defining Moments: Collective Growth at Monte Vista
While every tournament and dual meet showcased the team’s determination to improve, one standout moment came during the Monte Vista Girls Tournament on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The team earned 3rd place out of 30 teams, signaling a new level of collective growth.
Coach Viramontes recalled the recognition from other coaches:
“When others start saying ‘you guys are running something special over there,’ that validation is priceless. We see the progress every day, but when others notice it too, you know the program is on the right path.”
Leadership on and off the Mat
Seniors Analiese, Chloe, and Hope didn’t just compete—they led. They pushed one another, held teammates accountable, and lifted each other up during tough days. Watching their leadership evolve was “phenomenal,” said Coach Viramontes.
Chloe was known as a wrestler opponents dreaded—an electrifying competitor who had no previous wrestling experience before joining but quickly made a mark. Hope’s background in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu helped her adapt rapidly and dominate her weight class.
Analiese’s journey was especially inspiring: a freshman who had never wrestled before joining the team, she transformed into a wrestler consistently competing at the top of the bracket. While she might not have had the same tournament success as Hope or Chloe, her personal and athletic growth was a highlight for the coach.
Rising Stars and a Bright Future
Looking forward, Coach Viramontes expressed excitement about the returning players and the program’s future. The groundwork laid by this season’s seniors has raised the program’s profile and attracted new talent eager to join.
Freshman Malia Kollmeyer is expected to continue her meteoric rise, while Soren Mendoza is on track to be a key contender by the end of next season. Senior Khyla Adams has been a standout force, poised for a dominant final year.
Alongside Leia Meza, Mariane Meriga, and Aubrey Araiza, these athletes form a solid core ready to build upon this season’s success.
Coach Viramontes believes the team has what it takes to qualify for the State Tournament next year, an exciting prospect that reflects the program’s rapid development.
Offseason Focus: Technique and Mental Toughness
In wrestling, physical skill and mental strength are inseparable. Coach Viramontes emphasized that the biggest offseason priority is drilling technique relentlessly to perfect it.
“The mental side of wrestling is the hardest part to train,” he said. The team consistently applies life lessons to the sport, fostering mindset training that helps wrestlers push through adversity and maintain focus.
This balance of physical preparation and mental conditioning will continue to be the foundation for the program’s growth.
Conclusion: A Season of Grit, Growth, and Promise
The 2024-2025 season for Scripps Ranch High School girls wrestling was not just about wins, losses, or individual accolades—it was about building a culture of resilience, leadership, and continuous improvement.
With only nine wrestlers, the team’s ability to place third in a competitive City Championship and earn top-four finishes in multiple tournaments speaks volumes about their talent and tenacity.
The mentorship shown by the seniors, the emergence of talented freshmen, and the team’s collective mental toughness lay a promising foundation for seasons to come.
