As the new season approaches, the Serra Catholic High School softball team is gearing up for another exciting year. Coach Julie Opferman, who has been at the helm for the past few years, has high hopes for the team as they focus on consistent performance, player development, and building a strong team culture. In this preview article, we take a closer look at the returning players, new additions to the team, team leadership, challenges, and the upcoming schedule. One of the key players to watch out for this season is Kelly Morrissey, an 11th-grade pitcher and last year’s captain. Coach Opferman praises Morrissey for her strong leadership skills, both on and off the field. She will be a crucial player for the team, not just in terms of her pitching skills, but also as a role model for the younger players. Her experience and expertise will be invaluable to the team’s success. Another returning player who will make a significant impact is Alonna Morton, a 10th-grade shortstop and assistant captain. Morton has been a starter since her first year and is known for her outstanding defensive skills. Coach Opferman believes that Morton will be a key player in the team’s defense and expects her to continue to shine this season. Keyara Watkins, a 10th-grade catcher, is another player to watch out for. She played a crucial role in the team’s success last year and will be returning behind the plate this season. Coach Opferman praises Watkins for her strong work ethic and her ability to contribute both offensively and defensively. She will also be an assistant captain, showcasing her leadership skills and dedication to the team. The team has some promising new additions, and one of them is Giana Foster, a freshman utility player. Foster has a versatile skill set, being able to play in the outfield, infield, and even pitch. Coach Opferman praises her for her powerful swing and believes she has a lot of potential to contribute to the team’s success. Foster’s skill and talent will be a valuable addition to the team. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Opferman looks for players who possess qualities such as leadership, dedication, and a strong work ethic. Morrissey, Morton, and Watkins have been named as assistant captains, and Coach Opferman has high expectations for them to lead the team both on and off the field. Foster, being a freshman, will have to prove herself before earning a captain's role, but with her skills and potential, it is not far-fetched to see her leading the team in the future. Every season comes with its own set of challenges, and for the Serra Catholic High School softball team, the biggest challenge this year is to motivate players to reach their full potential. Coach Opferman has a few strategies in place to achieve this goal. Firstly, she sets clear goals and expectations for the team, giving them something to work towards. She also believes in celebrating small achievements along the way to boost the players' confidence. Lastly, she leads by example, showing her own dedication and passion for the game, which she hopes will inspire her players to give their best on the field. The team’s schedule for this season includes both section and non-section games. With a young team and the loss of talented seniors from last year, Coach Opferman expects to see a lot of leadership and maturity from the returning players. The team is looking forward to challenging games against section contenders, such as Greensburg Central Catholic and Jeannette. Moving down to 1A, they will face tough opponents, but the team is ready for the challenge. The Serra Catholic High School softball team is ready to take on the new season with enthusiasm and determination. With a mix of experienced and new players, the team is well-equipped to face any challenges that come their way. With clear goals, strong leadership, and a focus on development and team culture, the team is poised for success. Let’s cheer them on as they strive to reach their full potential and make this season a memorable one.
