As the new season approaches, Shortridge High School’s cheerleading program, led by Head Coach Dionna Johnson, is preparing for an exciting year filled with competition, team development, and a push for greater recognition as a sport. Offseason Focus and Training The offseason is a crucial time for the team, with a strong emphasis on: Fundraising to support competitions, gear, and team activities Volunteering to strengthen community ties Skill Development in stunts, tumbling, and strength conditioning to elevate performance Summer training kicks off on June 9th, with a focus on building strength and refining advanced cheer techniques. Potential Camps and Special Events While the team is still undecided about participating in camps or tournaments, they have been invited to attend the NCA Camp at the University of Louisville, a prestigious event that could provide valuable training and exposure. Returning Stars and Athletes to Watch Several cheerleaders have shown exceptional dedication and growth, positioning themselves for standout performances in the upcoming season: Amarri Whittaker (Freshman, entering 2nd year) – A hardworking athlete committed to excelling both on and off the court. Owen Alvis (Sophomore, entering 3rd year) – A seasoned cheerleader set to debut new skills and routines. Chroy Graham (Sophomore, Co-Captain, entering 3rd year) – A versatile team member who has adapted to multiple positions and is ready to shine in a new role. Community Engagement and Fan Involvement The team is actively engaging with the community through events designed to inspire young athletes and bring fans closer to the program: Youth Cheer Camp – A week-long program for aspiring cheerleaders of all ages. Juneteenth BBQ Celebration – A community event to foster connections and celebrate culture. Upcoming Competitions – A spirit competition and a cheer competition, providing fans with opportunities to support the team. Challenges and Goals The biggest challenge facing Shortridge Cheerleading is gaining official recognition as a sport rather than a club. Coach Johnson and the team are advocating for equal recognition and resources, emphasizing that cheerleading demands as much, if not more, dedication and athleticism as other sports. Looking Ahead With a committed coaching staff, talented athletes, and growing community support, Shortridge High School Cheerleading is poised for an exciting and impactful season.
