The Socastee High School volleyball program is making the most of its offseason as it prepares for the upcoming fall. Its strategic focus is on individualized training, player development, and filling key roles vacated by graduating seniors. Offseason Focus: Mastering Individual Positions Head Coach Gracie Hinson has taken a purposeful approach this offseason, emphasizing individualized positioning over general game play. “We’re using this time to fine-tune each player’s skills in their specific position,” Hinson shared. “Once the season begins, we put those pieces together and build team cohesion from there.” Tournament Experience: Gaining Confidence Through Competition Socastee’s squad didn’t shy away from tough competition this past season, gaining valuable experience and bonding opportunities at several high-level tournaments. These included: Indian Land Tournament Carolina Forest Tournament Dorman Tournament These events not only challenged the team but also gave players a chance to develop chemistry and build trust under pressure. Players to Watch: Returners Putting in the Work With nine returning varsity players participating in travel volleyball during the offseason, the commitment to improvement is clear. Standout players include: Jase Wethington and Bryson Smith – powerful hitters who are stepping up as offensive leaders. Preston Widner and Max Duke – key defensive players, with Max transitioning into the team’s new setter following the graduation of last year’s starter. “Max has stepped into the leadership role we needed in that setter position,” Hinson said. “The growth across the board has been impressive.” Coaching Perspective: Strategic Adjustments for a Stronger Season With some key roles to fill, the coaching staff is focused on evaluating position rotations and building a lineup that complements the team’s strengths. “It’s going to take time and testing to see what combinations work best,” said Hinson. “Our goal is to find the right balance that gives us the best shot at success.” Challenges Ahead: Replacing Key Graduates While the future looks bright, the team knows it won’t be without challenges. Filling crucial positions—especially at setter—is a top priority heading into the new season. Leadership, communication, and on-court chemistry will be pivotal as the team retools its lineup. Socastee Volleyball is laying the foundation for a big year—one rep, one drill, and one tournament at a time. With returning talent, new leaders emerging, and a focused offseason approach, this Braves squad is one to watch.
