Somerset Academy Chapel Trail Boys Soccer: A 2025 Winter Season of Resurgence and Resolve

The 2025 winter soccer season at Somerset Academy Chapel Trail was one for the books — a campaign marked by growth, grit, and a team that consistently rose to the occasion. Under the leadership of Head Coach Lance Lass, the Panthers didn’t just meet expectations — they shattered them. Though the season ended just shy of a coveted trip to the state championships, Somerset established itself as a rising powerhouse, with strong leadership, breakout players, and a program culture that promises continued success.

Stars of the Season: Cory Edwards and Agu Malec

At the core of the team’s remarkable run were two standouts: Cory Edwards and Agu Malec. Cory Edwards, named Team MVP, was the top scorer and a relentless presence across all areas of the field. Whether it was creating opportunities, finishing chances, or tracking back to defend, Cory’s contributions were the engine that kept Somerset running at full throttle. “A true all-around player,” said Coach Lass. “He helped everywhere.” Equally vital was team captain Agu Malec, whose energy and leadership were invaluable. Described by Lass as “the most important part of the energy on the field,” Agu’s emotional and tactical leadership brought intensity and unity to a squad that had to navigate both high expectations and high-pressure moments throughout the season.

A Strong Season with Bigger Goals in Sight

In Coach Lass’s words, the season was “great.” Somerset exceeded their preseason goals and turned heads across the region. Despite narrowly missing out on a berth to the state tournament, the Panthers played inspired soccer and made it clear they’re a team to watch in the years ahead. “We exceeded our goals,” Lass said, “but still just fell short of States.” That close call only fuels the hunger for the returning core, who now know what it takes to compete at the highest level.

Signature Wins: Defining Moments That Made a Statement

Every strong season has its turning points — moments when a team realizes just how good they can be. For Somerset, two unforgettable shutouts stood above the rest. In back-to-back statement victories, the Panthers dominated Doral and Boca Raton, two perennial contenders and former state champions. Somerset routed each team by a commanding 4-0 scoreline, sending shockwaves through the competition and cementing their place among Florida’s elite. “Those games proved we could not only compete with the best, but dominate them,” Coach Lass noted. “It showed the kind of team we had become.”

Rising to the Occasion: Sebi Fernandez and Jorge Molina Shine

Beyond the team’s star players, Somerset saw critical development from unexpected places. Goalkeeper Sebi Fernandez emerged as a force, taking over the starting role as a senior and delivering week after week. “He played huge the entire season,” Lass said of Fernandez, whose consistent performances in net provided a backbone for Somerset’s defensive structure. Meanwhile, Jorge Molina capitalized on an unexpected opportunity, stepping in on the wing due to injury. Not only did he fill the role — he thrived in it, turning in a season that few saw coming. “He turned in an amazing season,” said Lass. “He became a difference-maker.” Their stories reflect the heart of this Somerset team: adaptability, readiness, and the refusal to back down from any challenge.

Grit Under Pressure: A Team That Never Faltered

Injuries, tough matchups, and high-pressure moments are part of every season, and how a team responds to those challenges often defines their success. For Somerset, the answer was clear: they stepped up every single time. Whether dealing with lineup shuffles or recovering from tough losses, Coach Lass praised the character of his squad. “They always stepped up to every challenge,” he said, underscoring the mental toughness and cohesion that became the team’s trademark.

The Senior Class: From Question Marks to Exclamation Points

Replacing leadership is never easy, especially after graduating 17 seniors from the previous year’s roster. But the 2025 class proved themselves more than capable of carrying the torch. “I was fully encouraged by the new 17 seniors on this year's squad,” Lass said. “And they didn't fail me at all. Exceptional is the word.” These seniors brought not only talent, but professionalism, mentorship, and an unmatched drive to win. Their legacy goes beyond results — they’ve helped shape a culture that will elevate the program for years to come.

The Road Ahead: Experience, Depth, and Championship Aspirations

While it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to such an impactful senior class, Coach Lass is energized about what’s next. With 15 or more returning seniors who have already logged valuable minutes, the cupboard is far from bare. “These guys are ready to accept the challenge to go to States,” Lass declared, signaling the program’s clear ambition for next season. Players like Fernandez and Molina have laid the groundwork, and others are waiting in the wings to make their mark. The experience, chemistry, and hunger already brewing for 2026 make Somerset a legitimate contender.

Offseason Focus: Chasing a State Title

Ask Coach Lass about offseason goals, and the answer is direct: “Become State Champions.” There’s no ambiguity about where this team is headed. With talent, depth, and a coaching staff committed to pushing their players, the Panthers are not rebuilding — they’re reloading. The road to a state title is never easy, but Somerset has the foundation and the mindset to finish what they started this season.
