The 2024–25 season marked a major milestone for Somerset Christian School, as the girls' basketball program launched its first-ever varsity season. Under the leadership of Head Coach Gary Abbott, this young squad, made up entirely of middle schoolers and underclassmen, exceeded expectations and laid a strong foundation for the future. Season Overview With no seniors or juniors, the team entered the season with modest expectations. But they quickly proved they were ready to compete, finishing with a remarkable 12-8 record — a winning debut that would be impressive for any program, let alone one with no prior varsity experience. “This was our first ever varsity team and season,” Coach Abbott said. “To be over .500 in an inaugural season is almost unheard of.” Key Contributors and Player Development Leading the way was Addie Waddle, a 7th-grade point guard, who impressed with her poise and court vision. Marlee Durham, a freshman shooting forward, emerged as the team’s leading scorer, while 7th grader Sophia Guerrero anchored the defense as the leading rebounder. Together, these underclassmen formed the core of a team that not only competed but grew stronger each game. Turning Points and Team Character With such a young team, every game was a learning experience, and Coach Abbott saw growth throughout the season. Despite several injuries and pressure-filled moments, the team remained resilient, treating each challenge as an opportunity to gain experience and mature as players. “This season was all about building,” Abbott noted. “Each game was a defining moment in our future.” Looking Ahead With every player returning next year, plus a promising group of incoming middle schoolers, Somerset Christian’s future is bright. Coach Abbott is focused on improving shooting, ball handling, and decision-making this offseason to help his players take the next step. “We’re only going to get better,” he said. “The best is yet to come.” Where to Find Stats Official stats can be found through KHSAA or by contacting Coach Abbott directly.
