Hollywood, FL – After capturing a state title last year, the South Broward High School boys soccer team entered the 2024–25 season with high expectations, and once again delivered. Under the leadership of Head Coach Lionel Brown, the Bulldogs captured both the District Title and the inaugural Champions League Tournament championship, posting a dominant 16-game winning streak along the way.
Despite a narrow exit in the regional semifinals, the season was a resounding success, showcasing the team's depth, leadership, and resilience.
Senior Leadership Guides the Way
Senior captains Lucas Velazco and Mario Garcia, both key returners from the State Championship squad, anchored the team on and off the field.
Lucas Velazco led the team offensively from midfield, scoring 20 goals and orchestrating countless attacks.
Mario Garcia, the vocal leader of the defense, brought composure and grit to the back line, setting the standard with his work ethic and presence.
Joining the leadership core were junior captain Angelo Rodriguez and newcomer Joey Ben-Ezra.
Angelo, a returning state champion, controlled the tempo in midfield with his creativity and versatility.
Joey made an immediate impact in his debut season, leading the front line with 16 goals.
Rising Stars and Key Contributors
Among the breakout performers was Jimmy Asprilla, who thrived in his first season with the Bulldogs. Known for his defensive prowess, Jimmy also stepped up offensively, contributing 12 goals from midfield and becoming a constant threat on set pieces.
A Resilient Identity
While there wasn’t a single defining moment, Coach Brown pointed to the team’s collective resilience as their hallmark. After dropping their first match of the season, South Broward bounced back with an incredible 16-game winning streak, collecting two major trophies in the process.
“We knew being the reigning champs meant every opponent would bring their best,” said Coach Brown. “Our guys embraced that challenge and kept a one-game-at-a-time mentality.”
Seniors Leave Their Mark
This year’s senior class brought a level of experience unmatched in program history. Their leadership, championship pedigree, and balance on both sides of the ball helped maintain South Broward's elite status.
Looking Ahead
The future remains bright for the Bulldogs. With a strong core returning, including experienced juniors hungry to leave their own mark, Coach Brown is optimistic.
“We have a healthy, focused group coming back,” he said. “And with our field being renovated, there’s no better way to open a new chapter than chasing another state title.”
Offseason Focus
The coaching staff is committed to improving in every facet of the game, ensuring that the Bulldogs remain competitive and prepared for another title run.
