The South Plainfield High School boys varsity swim team wrapped up a historic and exhilarating season, going undefeated in the regular season and reaching the North II Group B State Sectional Tournament for the first time in program history. This accomplishment came just one year after winning their previous division and moving up, demonstrating the team’s continued growth and determination. Key Contributors and Standout Performances The season was fueled by several standout athletes who consistently delivered exceptional performances: Brandon Calderone led the team in total points scored. A powerhouse in the pool, Brandon captured gold in both the 100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke at the county tournament. He shattered school records in those same events and contributed to all three record-breaking relays: the 200 Medley, 200 Free, and 400 Free Relays. His stellar performance earned him a spot in the individual Meet of Champions state tournament. Corey Calderone also had a strong season, earning two county medals—including a bronze in the 200 IM—and setting a new school record in the 500 Freestyle. He was a key member of the record-breaking 200 Medley and 400 Free Relays. Noah Soto, the team’s second-highest point scorer, placed in the top 10 in the county for both the 200 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke. He was instrumental in all three record-setting relays and brought consistency and competitive fire to every meet. Riley Billian, a senior captain, capped off his career with a tremendous final season. As the third-highest point scorer and a true utility swimmer, he contributed across every event and every relay. He helped break the school record in the 200 Free Relay and served as a crucial leader and role model for the entire squad. Defining Moments A pivotal turning point came early in the season when South Plainfield upset perennial powerhouse Union Catholic. Despite the odds, the team delivered multiple personal-best times in a hard-fought, narrow victory—the program’s first ever over Union Catholic. That meet set the tone for the season and galvanized the team to chase excellence meet after meet. Rising Stars Freshman Jayden Rivera showed tremendous development throughout the season, ultimately earning a spot on the record-breaking 200 Freestyle Relay team. His growth and commitment highlighted the depth of young talent within the program. Team Resilience and Leadership Whether it was facing tough opponents, dealing with pressure, or overcoming adversity, the team rose to every challenge. Across the board, swimmers consistently shattered their personal bests when it mattered most. The senior class, led by Riley Billian, provided the backbone of the team’s culture, offering mentorship, relentless effort, and unwavering support for their teammates. Looking Ahead With a talented core trio—Brandon Calderone, Corey Calderone, and Noah Soto—returning as seniors next year, the Tigers are poised to chase a third consecutive division title. The future is bright, and the team is hungry for even greater accomplishments. Offseason Goals While the foundation is strong, the focus this offseason will be on building endurance, improving starts and turns, and fostering leadership among returning athletes.
