As the softball season approaches, excitement is building for the team at Steele Canyon High School. Under the guidance of Coach Kevin Pearlstein, the team is setting its sights high for the year ahead. With a talented group of returners and promising new additions, the Cougars are ready to take on their competitors and reach their goals. When asked about the team's goals for this season, Coach Pearlstein's response was clear - to improve from the beginning of the season to the end and peak during league and CIF play. As with every year, their ultimate goal is to win league, qualify for CIF, and ultimately bring home a CIF championship. With this consistent focus, the team is determined to give their all every day and strive for success. Key players to watch out for this season include senior Kamea Seunarine, who has already signed to play at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff. Along with her leadership on and off the field, Seunarine brings a wealth of talent and experience to the team. Sophomore Marina Gonzalez, who was a 1st team all Grossmont League player last year, is expected to continue to make a significant impact this season. Fellow sophomores Ily Barclay and Hailey Trujillo, both 2nd team all Grossmont League players from last year, also have the potential to make big contributions. However, despite their individual accomplishments, these players are all focused on the team's success. Aside from their strong returning players, the team is also excited about the addition of talented freshmen. Pitcher Bailey Evans and infielder Kallan Shaw are both expected to compete for playing time and bring a fresh energy to the team. With their potential, they are sure to make a positive impact on the Cougars' performance this season. Another important aspect of the team's success is their captains. Seunarine, along with fellow seniors Bella Azevedo and Hailey Trujillo, have been chosen as team captains. Coach Pearlstein praises them for their leadership skills, academic excellence, and putting the team's goals first. As role models for their teammates, these captains are ready to lead the team to victory. Aside from their on-field training and practices, the team also engages in team-building activities to foster trust and camaraderie. These include hiking, yogurt, and unconventional games such as backwards softball and whiffle ball.
