In a season full of growth, grit, and standout performances, the Strongsville High School gymnastics team delivered a memorable year under the leadership of first-year Head Coach Owen McConnell. Despite injuries and a young roster, the team rallied to produce individual state qualifiers, breakthrough meets, and a renewed sense of belief in what’s possible. Star Power and State Appearances The team was led by Junior Shayler Smith and Senior Gianna Upchurch, both of whom qualified for states in the all-around. Smith anchored the team on vault and beam, while Upchurch excelled on bars and floor, setting the tone with their leadership and skill throughout the year. Season Highlights Coach McConnell described the season as “everything I could’ve hoped for.” Though it began quietly, the team steadily rose to the occasion. A key turning point came at the All Around Challenge meet, where the team placed third in a high-pressure session against elite competition. The experience sharpened the team's focus and sparked belief in its potential. Breakout Athletes Two athletes showed remarkable development: Sarah Waugh, a returning senior, had her best season yet, capturing first-place finishes on vault, beam, and floor and becoming a reliable all-around contributor. Madalyn Caldwell emerged as a clutch performer, especially on vault and floor. Her work ethic and execution under pressure made her a key part of the postseason lineup. Both athletes exemplified the growth mindset that defined the team this year. Handling Adversity with Maturity Injuries and setbacks didn’t derail Strongsville. Thanks to their depth and tight team chemistry, the Mustangs remained competitive throughout the season. “We take the bad and we embrace it,” said McConnell. “That’s part of growing as a team.” The squad continues to work on performing under pressure, a key focus moving forward. A Senior Class That Set the Tone This year’s seniors brought heart, leadership, and selflessness to the program. They mentored younger teammates, set a positive tone at practices and meets, and supported coaches every step of the way. Their legacy is one of unity and commitment. Bright Future Ahead With key returners like Shayler Smith and a strong group of underclassmen, Strongsville enters the offseason with momentum. “We have the motivation, the confidence, and the desire to want more,” McConnell said. The focus this offseason? Building confidence, especially under pressure, is a must in the mentally demanding world of gymnastics.
