The Torrey Pines High School wrestling team has high hopes and big goals for the upcoming season, with a strong group of returning wrestlers and promising new additions. Under the leadership of Coach Michael Bigrigg, the team is determined to make history and leave a lasting mark on the San Diego Section and the state of California. One of the main strengths of the team lies in its returning players, who have been putting in hard work and dedication during the off-season to improve their skills and technique.
According to Coach Bigrigg, consistency is the key to their success, and each wrestler has been focused on developing their fundamentals. Leading the pack of returning players is Jacob Cava, who has been a team captain for the past three seasons. Cava is known for his technical abilities and has already made a mark in the state, finishing in the top 24 two years ago. Unfortunately, his last season was cut short due to injury, but he is geared up and ready to come back stronger than ever this season.
Another standout returning player is Ruby Julien Newsom, the girls' team captain for the past two seasons. Newsom recently made a statement at the toughest preseason tournament in the Western US, defeating the #8, #5, and #4 ranked wrestlers in California to take home the championship. This is a clear indication of her determination and skill, and she is expected to have a major impact on the team this season.
In addition to Cava and Newsom, the team also boasts three other returning wrestlers who placed in the top 8 in the San Diego Section last season. Carter Bolt, who placed third, Mahiro Okazaki, who placed sixth, and Jacob Sakofsky, who placed eighth, are all expected to have a strong presence on the mats this year. They have all been putting in the work during the off-season and are ready to showcase their progress during the upcoming season.
With such a strong group of returning players, it is no wonder that Coach Bigrigg has set high goals for the team this season. The first one is to qualify 5 wrestlers for the state championships, which will be a significant achievement for Torrey Pines High School. The team has come close to this goal in the past, but this year they are determined to make it a reality. Another ambitious goal for the team is to finish in the top 10 in the highly competitive San Diego Section.
