As the new track season approaches, Universal Audenried Charter High School is preparing to make a mark in the competitive world of high school athletics. Despite the loss of some key runners, head coach Tauheed Alim remains optimistic about the season ahead. We sat down with Coach Alim to discuss the team’s goals, returning athletes, new prospects, and the challenges they face.
Building a Competitive Team
Coach Alim has a clear vision for the track team this season. His primary goal is to build a strong and competitive squad, even in the face of losing some of their fastest athletes. To achieve this, he emphasizes improving individual performances, fostering a relentless work ethic, and building a strong sense of camaraderie among teammates.
“The key to success,” Coach Alim explains, “is ensuring every athlete improves. If we can push ourselves to get better each day, we will be competitive. Hard work and a strong team spirit will make the difference.”
Key Returning Athletes
Despite the departure of some top runners, the team still boasts a talented core. Among the top returning athletes are Samad Cromwell, Tashawn Cole, Jabriel Wearing, and Prince Cooper. Each of these runners brings a unique skill set and leadership qualities to the team.
“These guys have a strong work ethic and lead by example,” Coach Alim says. “They set the tone for the younger athletes and show what it takes to succeed in this sport.”
New Faces with Potential
While it’s still early in the season, Coach Alim is closely monitoring several newcomers who could make an immediate impact. Many of these young athletes are adjusting well, particularly in the distance events.
“They’re adapting quickly and bringing fresh energy to the team,” he notes. “We’re hopeful that a few of them will step up and contribute significantly.”
Leadership and Team Captains
Strong leadership is a cornerstone of a successful team. Coach Alim places a high value on qualities such as dedication, motivation, and the ability to inspire teammates. While he has yet to name official captains, several athletes are displaying leadership potential.
“I want our captains to be the ones who push themselves the hardest and encourage their teammates to do the same,” he says. “That leadership will be crucial as we face tough competition.”
Fostering Team Chemistry
A key focus for Coach Alim this season is ensuring that team chemistry remains strong. He believes that a positive team environment translates directly to success on the track.
“We’ll have team-building activities and create a supportive atmosphere where everyone feels valued,” he explains. “When teammates trust and encourage each other, we perform better as a unit.”
Motivating Athletes to Reach Their Potential
Athletes perform at their best when they are motivated, and Coach Alim has developed a strategy to inspire his runners.
“I focus on setting individual goals, providing constant feedback, and emphasizing progress over perfection,” he says. “Every small improvement matters, and I want my athletes to see that their hard work is paying off.”
Overcoming Preseason Challenges
The biggest challenge heading into this season has been the loss of several top runners to other schools. Adjusting to his new role as head coach has also been a learning experience for Alim.
“I’m still learning as I go, but I’m confident in our ability to overcome these obstacles,” he states. “We have a talented group, and we’re working hard to fill the gaps left by those who moved on.”
Tough Competition on the Horizon
The team’s schedule is packed with competitive meets, and Coach Alim is eager to see how his squad measures up against some of the best programs in the area.
“I’m looking forward to facing strong teams like Imhotep Charter and Overbrook High School,” he says. “Those meets will be a great test of our progress and will show us where we need to improve.”
A New Coaching Approach
As a first-year head coach, Alim is bringing a fresh perspective to the team. His focus is on creating a balanced and disciplined environment, ensuring that every athlete has the opportunity to succeed.
“My coaching style is different from previous seasons,” he acknowledges. “I’m prioritizing discipline, accountability, and making sure we have a structured plan for improvement.”
The Mental Side of Track and Field
Coach Alim understands that mental toughness is just as important as physical ability. Track and field is a sport that requires focus, resilience, and the ability to overcome setbacks.
“Mental toughness is extremely important,” he says. “Our athletes need to stay focused, bounce back from tough races, and believe in their ability to improve.”
Training and Conditioning Adjustments
To maximize performance, the team has made adjustments to its training and conditioning program. These changes include incorporating more recovery time, targeted drills to address weaknesses, and a greater emphasis on mental preparation.
“We want to ensure that our athletes stay healthy and peak at the right time,” Coach Alim explains. “Adding recovery time and mental training will help us stay strong throughout the season.”
Strengths and Areas for Improvement
The team’s greatest strength lies in its resilience and potential. However, with the loss of key sprinters, speed is an area that requires additional focus.
“Our biggest weakness right now is in the sprints,” he admits. “We’re working hard to improve our speed while also developing strength and endurance.”
A Season of Growth and Determination
As Universal Audenried Charter High School’s track team embarks on a new season, the focus is clear: growth, perseverance, and building a strong foundation for the future. Coach Alim’s leadership and the dedication of his athletes will play a key role in shaping the team’s success.
“We’re ready to put in the work and compete,” he concludes. “This season is all about improvement, and I’m excited to see what we can achieve.”
With a talented mix of returning athletes and promising newcomers, the team is determined to make strides on the track. Under the guidance of Coach Alim, Universal Audenried Charter High School is poised for a season filled with challenges, progress, and achievements.
