Vista Del Lago Girls Soccer Makes History in 2025: A Season of Triumph, Teamwork, and Unbreakable Spirit
In a season that will be remembered for generations to come, the Vista Del Lago High School Girls Soccer Team made history in spectacular fashion. Under the guidance of Head Coach Chris Morfin, the team not only secured their first league championship since 2018, but went on to win the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section title and cap it all off with a CIF State Regional Championship — a feat no other sports team in school history had achieved before.
“This season was fantastic,” Coach Morfin reflected. “We made history — not just for girls soccer, but for the entire athletic program at Vista Del Lago.”
From their early season challenges to their championship triumphs, this group proved that unity, resilience, and belief in a shared mission could elevate a team beyond its limits.
Building a Championship Culture
One of the most remarkable things about this Vista Del Lago squad is the depth and unity of its roster. Rather than single out just a few standout athletes, Coach Morfin made it clear that every player contributed — on and off the field.
“Everyone had a role,” he said. “Every athlete was a contributor to the team's success.”
That spirit of shared responsibility created a culture where every player pushed each other to grow — whether starting on the field, cheering from the sidelines, or showing up to practice with energy and intent. It was the foundation that fueled their record-breaking season.
A Turning Point Rooted in Values
The turning point of the season didn’t come during a playoff match or a dramatic finish — it came after a league-opening loss. Before that game, Coach Morfin delivered a powerful speech about the team’s RAVENS values — a set of core principles the program stands by.
While the result wasn’t what they had hoped for, the message landed.
“It helped us understand and believe that we could play together as a team,” said Coach Morfin. “That loss laid the foundation for what came next.”
And what came next was nothing short of remarkable. The team bounced back with a win in their next league game, igniting a winning streak that carried all the way to a state championship.
Heroes of the Run
As the season progressed, several players stepped up in major ways, growing into key roles and delivering when it mattered most.
Freshman goalkeeper emerged as a crucial last line of defense, making numerous game-saving stops against top-tier competition. In front of her, the defensive line of juniors Leeanna Gonzalez and Jasmin Osio, alongside seniors Blanca Martinez and Nancy Valle, developed into a well-oiled unit, masterfully executing an offside trap that disrupted countless opposing attacks.
Freshman left wing Araceli Thomas made her mark with her tenacious two-way play, while junior right wing Irma Damaso showed flair in the attack with 6 assists and 7 goals, including the decisive goal in the CIF Championship game.
In the midfield, Kassandra Rios was a commanding presence. The senior center defensive midfielder tallied 11 assists and 16 goals, including key scores in both the section and state championship games. Her partner in the middle, senior attacking midfielder Daya King, had an extraordinary season, recording 28 goals and 8 assists, including a goal in the section title game and the assist in the state final.
Up top, the striker duo of Angeli Bolanos (7 goals, 8 assists) and Andrea Ordonez (12 goals, 3 assists) added relentless offensive pressure, helping stretch defenses and open up scoring chances.
Thriving Under Pressure
One of the defining traits of this team was their ability to stay positive and focused, even when the odds were stacked against them. Despite experiencing some early-season setbacks, including tough losses, the team never lost their belief.
“They always kept a positive attitude,” Coach Morfin noted. “They responded very well under pressure — especially during the last three away games of the CIF State Regional Championship tournament.”
Those late-game heroics under pressure were crucial to securing the regional title, where the team faced hostile environments, grueling travel, and high stakes — and came out victorious every time.
Seniors Lead the Way
At the heart of the championship push was a powerful senior class. With leadership, energy, and experience, they set the tone throughout the season.
“They brought so much to the program,” Coach Morfin said. “Their performances on the field reflected the hard work they’ve put in over the years.”
The seniors not only led by example — they created a legacy that future teams will look to build on. Their combination of skill, determination, and commitment proved to be the perfect formula for team success.
Eyes on the Future
Looking ahead, the outlook is bright. With 15 players expected to return, Vista Del Lago’s girls soccer program is positioned for sustained excellence.
“What excites me the most is that the returning players will come in with a winning mentality,” said Coach Morfin. “They know that hard work, commitment, and determination pay off.”
This offseason, the focus will be on improving fitness and both offensive and defensive explosiveness — key areas that can elevate the team’s performance even further.
More Than Just a Season
In a year of firsts, Coach Morfin’s team didn’t just win games — they rewrote the history books.
First league title since 2018
First CIF Sac-Joaquin Section title in school history
First CIF State Regional Championship — across all sports at the school
But perhaps even more importantly, they redefined what’s possible at Vista Del Lago. Through teamwork, resilience, and belief in each other, they showed what can happen when a team commits to something bigger than themselves.
As Coach Morfin said best: “This team believed in each other from the start — and that made all the difference.”
