As the new school year begins, the West High School cross-country team is gearing up for another successful season under the guidance of Coach Ken Miyazaki. Coming off a strong performance last year, where they finished third at the CIF-SS Finals and fifth at the State Finals, the team's goal this year is to finish in the top two at CIF-SS and top three at State. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Miyazaki immediately highlights the standout performances of two athletes, senior Alexis Wolfinger and sophomore Kamilah Salim. Wolfinger had an impressive track season, breaking the school record in the 3200m and finishing third at CIF-SS. Salim, on the other hand, made a strong debut as a freshman last year and Coach Miyazaki expects her to continue her successful performance this season. But it's not just about individual performances, as Coach Miyazaki points out the importance of team chemistry and camaraderie. While he doesn't believe in appointing specific team captains, he knows that true leaders will emerge and bring their own unique strengths to make the team even stronger. He also stresses the value of each athlete pushing and holding one another accountable, with the ultimate goal of achieving their collective goals. The team's preparation for this season has been smooth, according to Coach Miyazaki. The success of last year has motivated the girls to set even higher goals and they have been pushing each other to reach them. However, there have been some challenges, such as having to fill the gap left by one of their top runners who joined flag football. But Coach Miyazaki has full confidence in his team, as everyone has stepped up to fill the spot collectively. Looking at the team's schedule for the season, their first big test will be at the Woodbridge Invitational on September 21st. The "Rated Race" at this invitational features a fast course and tough competition, giving the team an opportunity to see where they stand against other top teams. Additionally, the addition of Palos Verdes to their league will make for exciting competition as they battle for the league title. Coach Miyazaki is also keeping an eye on their biggest competitors from last year, Dana Hills and Santa Margarita, who beat them at CIF-SS and Yorba Linda. When asked about any changes or improvements made to the team's training and conditioning program, Coach Miyazaki emphasizes its importance.
