The West Warwick High School cross-country team is gearing up for a new season under the leadership of Coach Dylan Brobisky. With a young and talented team, Brobisky aims to improve upon their previous season and build a strong foundation for the future. I had the opportunity to speak with Coach Brobisky about the team's outlook for this year, and he shared his thoughts on the team's top returning players, new players who will make an impact, team chemistry and camaraderie, and their schedule for the season. The top returning players from last season are Jacob Horta (senior) and Nina Lopes (senior). Horta was the top finisher from the team in every meet he competed in last season and is aiming to qualify for the State Championship this year. What makes Horta special, according to Coach Brobisky, is his dedication and leadership. He brings a positive energy to practices and supports and advises his teammates. On the girls' side, Nina Lopes has improved her speed during the outdoor track season and is expected to make an impact in cross country this year. While the team doesn't have any new members on the boys' side, Coach Brobisky believes that freshman Carsyn Marso will have a significant impact on the girls' team. Marso qualified for the middle school state championship last season and has shown commitment by attending optional summer workouts. Coach Brobisky also mentioned that senior Vanessa Garrido is a strong candidate for team captain. Team chemistry and camaraderie are essential for any successful team. Coach Brobisky believes that a team captain should not only give their best effort but also encourage and advise their teammates to improve. Jacob Horta and either Nina Lopes or Vanessa Garrido are likely to be named team captains for this season. To build team chemistry, Coach Brobisky plans on incorporating fun team activities such as scavenger hunts or movie nights before races. The team's schedule for this season looks promising, with meets such as the Martha's Vineyard Invitational, the Ocean State Invitational, and a potential invitational in mid-October. Coach Brobisky hopes that by having the same core members from last year, the team can focus on recruiting new members, particularly for the girls' team. When it comes to his coaching style, Coach Brobisky's main focus is tailoring training plans to suit each individual on the team.
