Wilmot Basketball 2025 Season Recap: Rising Through Adversity, Growing as One
In the world of high school sports, growth often matters as much as the win-loss column. For Coach Dakota Neppl and the Wilmot School District basketball program, the 2025 winter season was about laying a strong foundation, pushing through adversity, and finding momentum at just the right time. Though the record may not capture the full picture, this past season was one marked by grit, improvement, and the emergence of a team identity — a group of student-athletes committed to each other and the program’s long-term success.
A Season of Progress
Reflecting on the season, Coach Neppl described it simply but powerfully: “I thought the season was a success.”
Despite a midseason slump that tested the team’s morale and resilience, Wilmot battled through every challenge with character and unity. The team faced a tough stretch — a 12-game losing streak — that could have derailed their confidence. But rather than fold, the Panthers dug deep.
“What defined us was picking up the wins at the end of the season when we needed them the most to place us into the playoffs and give us a full head of steam,” said Coach Neppl.
That late-season turnaround showcased a crucial aspect of any team’s DNA: the ability to bounce back and play their best when it matters most.
Key Contributors: Stepping Up and Leading the Way
One of the major storylines this season was how different players stepped up in critical roles, both expected and unexpected. At the top of the stat sheet were Maddux Foss and Ethan Schwenn, the team’s leading scorers early in the season.
Maddux Foss was the go-to option when the team needed a bucket, showing composure and skill in pressure moments.
Ethan Schwenn brought defensive toughness and intensity to every matchup. His evolution into the team’s defensive stopper set the tone on that end of the floor.
But as the season wore on and challenges like injuries emerged, other players rose to the occasion. Daniel Kohl and Micah Pelzel increased their minutes and impact, using their size and physicality to provide a much-needed presence in the paint.
“Daniel and Micah played our big presence down low for us,” noted Coach Neppl. “They were critical in our mid-to-late season run.”
From JV to Varsity: The Next Wave Emerges
Perhaps the most encouraging sign for the future of Wilmot basketball was the emergence of several younger players who began the year on junior varsity but earned meaningful varsity minutes as the season progressed. Players like Kevin Gibson, Carson Jurgens, Noah Sorenson, and Daniel Kohl saw expanded roles and made the most of the opportunity.
By season’s end, these players weren’t just filling in — they were contributing.
“To see their growth was exciting,” said Coach Neppl. “They went from JV rotation guys to varsity contributors, and that’s a testament to their work ethic and desire to compete.”
This upward trajectory of the program’s younger players speaks volumes about the culture being built at Wilmot — a culture where improvement is expected, opportunity is earned, and development is ongoing.
Rising Through Adversity
No team wants to lose a key scorer during the season, but adversity often reveals a team’s character. When one of Wilmot’s top offensive threats missed a significant chunk of games, the scoring burden shifted, and the team had to adapt quickly.
“That hurt us significantly, and it showed,” Coach Neppl admitted. “But the guys stepped up. We needed more contributions across the board, and we got them.”
The players responded with heart, resilience, and determination, rallying behind each other and fighting through tough matchups without letting the pressure define them.
The Payoff: Playing Their Best at the Right Time
Despite a stretch of losses that could have derailed the season, the Panthers peaked when it mattered most, grabbing clutch wins late and building momentum heading into postseason play. For a team still learning how to win, that kind of finish is more valuable than any early success.
Coach Neppl emphasized how proud he was of the group’s ability to play their best basketball when it counted — a trait that elite programs at every level strive for.
A Personal Milestone: Four Years of Growth Together
While the players’ development has been the focal point, this season also marked a meaningful chapter for Coach Neppl himself. The 2025 season was his third leading the team, and next year will be a special one, as it will be his fourth with the group that started as freshmen during his first year.
“To see the growth and development they’ve all gotten is incredible,” he said. “I’ve watched them grow from freshman players finding their footing, into varsity leaders competing with heart.”
There’s a unique bond that forms between a coach and a class he’s mentored from day one, and for Coach Neppl, 2026 will be the culmination of that journey, with high hopes and plenty of pride already in place.
Looking Ahead: Leadership, Competition, and Continued Development
With several young players gaining experience this year and a core group returning next season, the future is bright for Wilmot basketball. But Coach Neppl knows continued growth isn’t automatic — it takes dedication.
“What excites me most is the hunger I’m seeing in our returning players,” he said. “They love to compete, and the young guys are getting better, which pushes everyone.”
This offseason, the emphasis will be on two critical components: developing more vocal leaders and refining fundamental skills — the building blocks that turn good teams into great ones.
“We’re looking to find more leaders and competitors,” he added. “These young guys are improving fast, so it’s pushing our older guys to improve too. That’s the kind of competition that helps teams grow.”
Final Thoughts: More Than a Season, It Was a Step Forward
As the curtain closes on the 2025 season, Wilmot’s basketball program stands on firm footing. While there were growing pains, losing streaks, and injuries, there were also comebacks, breakthroughs, and bright flashes of future success. It was a season defined not by perfection, but by progress.
For Coach Neppl and the Panthers, the mission remains clear: keep building, keep growing, and keep believing in the team-first mentality that brought them this far.
Because if the past few months are any indication, Wilmot isn’t just preparing for next season — they’re preparing to make noise. And when that happens, this 2025 team will be remembered as the one that laid the foundation.
