Wiscasset Volleyball Prepares to Launch First Varsity Season with Purpose and Passion
Laying the Foundation: Focus on Fundamentals and Volleyball IQ
As Wiscasset Middle/High School launches its first official JV/Varsity volleyball program, Head Coach Julie Jones has kept the team laser-focused on the building blocks of success: fundamentals, chemistry, and volleyball IQ.
“Our goal this offseason has been to create a solid foundation,” said Coach Jones. “We want to develop a competitive mindset and a smart, cohesive team that can grow together.”
Sand Courts and Team Bonding: Offseason Training Gets Creative
A unique part of the team's offseason has been training on the Jones Family Sand Volleyball Courts—private sand courts introduced by Coach Jones herself. These sessions are designed to improve agility, conditioning, and resilience.
“Sand training has really challenged the players in a fun way,” Jones explained. “It’s excellent for endurance, mental toughness, and team building.”
The team also participated in a tournament at Buckfield High School in March, which doubled as a team bonding event and a chance to compete in a low-stakes but high-energy environment.
A New Era: First Varsity Roster in Program History
2025 marks a major milestone for Wiscasset Volleyball, as this season will be the first with an official JV and Varsity roster. Coming off a club-based program, this transition represents both growth and challenge.
“We have a young team, but they’re determined,” said Jones. “This group has the grit and passion to represent Wiscasset in a whole new light.”
Rising Stars: Burkhardt and West Lead the Charge
Two players expected to lead the offensive front are Ella Burkhardt and Emily West. After strong club seasons and impressive offseason effort, the duo is poised to make a major impact.
“They’ve both worked extremely hard and complement each other well on the court,” said Jones. “They’re going to be fun to watch this year.”
Strength, Nutrition, and Supportive Habits
While still early in the program's development, fitness and nutrition have become key talking points. The team has worked on sand-based strength and conditioning, and players are encouraged to fuel properly for performance.
“We talk about hydration, balanced meals, and how to fuel their bodies like athletes,” said Jones. “Our families are really supportive, which helps reinforce those habits.”
Coach’s Vision: Mindset, Discipline, and Growth
Coach Jones brings a strong philosophy into the season—one rooted in effort, discipline, and support.
“I focus on fundamentals, discipline, and mindset,” she said. “Hard work and coachability are just as important as talent. We want our athletes to push themselves and support each other every step of the way.”
Engaging the Community: Clinics, Scrimmages, and Social Media
Wiscasset Volleyball is actively working to grow its fanbase and community presence. Through youth clinics and community scrimmages, the team is building excitement around the new varsity program.
“We’ve been using social media and hosting local events to connect with fans and future players,” said Jones. “The support from the community has been amazing.”
Looking Ahead: Challenges and Competitive Spirit
As a first-year sanctioned program, Wiscasset knows it will face more experienced and established teams. Still, Coach Jones is confident her group is ready to rise to the challenge.
Experience and consistency are things we’ll continue to build,” said Jones. “But our players are hungry to learn, compete, and represent Wiscasset with pride.”
