As the new high school baseball season approaches, all eyes are on the Wynford High School team. This team has been consistently successful over the past few years, and this season looks to be no different. To get a better understanding of the team's strengths and challenges, we sat down with Coach Tom Smith for a preview of the upcoming season.
One of the main reasons for the team's success in recent years has been the strong core of returning players. Coach Smith highlighted some key players who will be making a big impact this season. The top returning players from last season are Brayden Campbell, Gage Massey, and Drew Pope. These players are not only talented on the field, but they also possess leadership qualities that make them stand out. "Our goals are to be a class team, a smart team, and compete on every pitch. If we do those things, wins will follow," says Coach Smith.
However, the team is not solely relying on returning players. There are also some new players who are expected to make an immediate impact. These players include Drew Johnson, Collin Hulsmeyer, Wes Prenger, and Landon Miller. Coach Smith believes that these players will not only bring talent to the team but also an understanding of the team's culture. "These guys know our culture and will help pass it on to the new guys," he says.
When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Smith looks for players who possess certain qualities. "I look for players who are not only skilled on the field, but also have leadership qualities and a positive attitude," he says. Currently, Brayden Campbell, Gage Massey, and Drew Pope are the team captains, but there are also other players battling for the role. These players include Brayden Campbell who is a transfer student, Gage Massey, and Drew Pope.
Team chemistry and camaraderie are crucial for any successful team. Coach Smith believes that team leaders play a vital role in creating a positive team environment. "Team leaders need to teach the younger/newer players. They keep everyone positive and focused. They take the blame when things don't go as planned. They don't make excuses or point fingers," he says. This kind of attitude not only creates a strong bond between teammates but also helps in achieving the team's goals.
Motivation is also a crucial aspect of any sports team. Coach Smith believes that the team's leaders play a significant role in motivating the players to push themselves to their full potential. "Our leaders do a good job of getting the young guys involved. If the coaches see somebody falling off, we communicate with the leaders. Just keep the positive culture," he says.
Preparing for a new season always comes with its own set of challenges. Coach Smith mentions that one of the biggest challenges this season has been the adjustment of new players and filling the gaps left by the graduation of four key players. "We graduated 4 really good players. The challenge is moving players around to fill the holes the best we can," he says. However, Coach Smith believes that the team's depth and talent will help overcome these challenges.
The team's schedule for this season looks to be a tough one, with some strong opponents lined up. However, Coach Smith believes that this will only make the team stronger. "Our strength this year is depth. We have a lot of young talented players that could earn playing time. Our weakness is the lack of experience of those young talented guys. I think the internal competition will get them ready. I just need to put the right guys in the right spots," he says.
While physical training and conditioning are essential, Coach Smith also emphasizes the importance of mental toughness for his team. "We have had a lot of success because our guys stayed positive when we started slow last season and after some tough losses. This has resulted in 3 straight 20+ win seasons. This group needs to be just as mentally tough if we want to succeed," he says. The team's training and conditioning program has also been improved to focus on building mental toughness and resilience.
Finally, Coach Smith's coaching philosophy is centered around building a strong team dynamic and utilizing the team's strengths. "Our strength this year is depth. We have a lot of young talented players that could earn playing time. Our weakness is the lack of experience of those young talented guys. I think the internal competition will get them ready. I just need to put the right guys in the right spots," he says. The team's depth and talent will be crucial in achieving their goals this season.
In conclusion, the Wynford High School baseball team is gearing up for another successful season. With a strong core of returning players, talented new additions, and a positive team dynamic, this team is ready to take on any challenges that come their way. Coach Smith and his coaching staff have put in a lot of effort to build a strong team both physically and mentally, and their hard work is sure to pay off on the field.
