Yazoo City High School Girls Basketball 2025 Season Recap: Building Momentum Toward a Bright Future
As the 2025 winter basketball season concluded, Yazoo City High School’s girls basketball program demonstrated steady growth and promise under the guidance of Head Coach Joffre Washington. With a talented senior class leading the charge and rising stars ready to make their mark, Yazoo City is positioning itself for continued success in the competitive high school basketball landscape.
Senior Leadership Drives Team Success
Coach Washington emphasized the crucial role played by his senior leaders this season. Seniors E'kemii Johnson, Torletta Johnson, Sincere Fleming, I'liciona White, and A'Kayla Hudson formed the backbone of the team’s efforts on both ends of the court.
Among them, E'kemii Johnson stood out as one of the best guards in the state. Recognized as a Mississippi/Alabama All-Star and selected to play in the Josh Hubbard Showcase, E’kemii earned 2nd Team All-State honors for her outstanding performance. Coach Washington highlighted her versatility and scoring ability: “She can score at all five levels and is very skilled.” E’kemii’s leadership and dynamic playmaking ability set a high standard for her teammates.
Torletta Johnson provided the team with critical defensive intensity and leadership, along with clutch three-point shooting. Her ability to defend tough opponents while contributing offensively made her an invaluable asset.
Sincere Fleming may not have grabbed headlines with flashy plays, but her relentless hustle defined the team’s grit. “She did all the little things for us—diving on the floor, taking charges, making hustle plays,” Coach Washington remarked, underscoring the importance of players who contribute selflessly.
Iliciona White brought toughness and a physical presence, anchoring the team’s defensive efforts. Meanwhile, A’Kayla Hudson, returning from an ACL injury, provided much-needed interior defense and rebounding, helping stabilize the paint on both ends.
This senior class not only led with their skills but also set the tone for work ethic and commitment, forming a foundation for Yazoo City’s evolving program.
Season Overview: Progress Marked by Big Wins
Reflecting on the season as a whole, Coach Washington described it as “pretty good,” noting that the team’s journey ended just one game shy of reaching the Coliseum, falling in the Elite Eight to eventual champion Pontotoc. Despite that narrow miss, the season was deemed a success, with tangible improvements each year since Coach Washington took over.
“Our team has improved every year since I’ve been here, so we’re definitely heading in the right direction,” he said.
One of the most significant turning points for the program came from a series of signature wins against larger 6A schools such as Northwest Rankin and Clinton. These victories demonstrated the team’s ability to compete at a high level and showcased their growth as a cohesive unit.
“Getting wins over 6A schools was huge for our program. It showed the girls that when we play together as a team, we can beat anyone,” Coach Washington reflected.
These wins not only boosted confidence but also established Yazoo City as a competitive force capable of challenging the top teams in the region.
Emerging Stars Poised for Breakout Season
Looking toward the future, the excitement centers around the promising juniors who will soon step into bigger roles. Coach Washington singled out juniors Lakyra Bankhead and Jer'Mya Porter as players ready to make significant strides in the upcoming season.
Both Bankhead and Porter have already earned recognition beyond the regular season by being selected to play in the prestigious Talkin Hoops in da Sip Showcase this spring. There, they competed against some of the top juniors in the state, proving their ability to hold their own on a bigger stage.
Bankhead’s development has been particularly encouraging. She has improved her three-point shooting, a skill that will “catapult her game to new heights,” according to Coach Washington. Combined with her already excellent defensive skills, Bankhead is positioned to become a leader on both ends of the court. “I’m expecting a lot from her as she steps into the leadership role this year,” Coach Washington said.
Jer’Mya Porter will bring a dynamic inside-outside game that makes her a matchup nightmare for opposing post players. Her versatility and leadership qualities are seen as critical to the team’s future success.
Junior Jamya McCoy also had a great season for us. Going into her final season, the team is going to need her senior leadership this year. She is one of my most knowledgeable players, and she's one of the toughest. McCoy is the coach on the floor who can direct the traffic. She, along with Porter, has improved on her outside shooting ability, which is going to make her a tough cover for opponents.
Players on the rise include junior point guard Malia McPherson and sophomore shooting guard Makenzie Johnson. These two guards are very talented and have a very high skill set. If they continue to put in the work to improve on a daily basis, they both will be DI prospects.
Challenges and Growth: A Program on the Rise
While some questions about how the team responded to challenges such as injuries or tough losses were left unanswered, Coach Washington’s focus on steady improvement suggests a program committed to learning and growth.
The close loss in the Elite Eight to the eventual state champion Pontotoc highlighted how far the team had come and provided motivation for the returning players.
Offseason Focus: Continuing the Climb
Although specifics about offseason plans were not detailed, it is clear that the team’s upward trajectory depends on continued skill development and preparation. The foundation built by the seniors and the emerging junior stars set the stage for ongoing growth.
Coach Washington’s vision for Yazoo City Girls Basketball includes nurturing the talents of his young players and building a culture of hard work and teamwork.
