This season, the Thomas Downey High School wrestling team has set their sights on continuing to grow and improve from last year. Team coach, Luis Magana, spoke to us about his team this season, and shared his goals and strategies for the team in the upcoming competition. Coach Magana is seeking to build on the strengths of the team, while also looking to improve day to day performance to unlock their maximum potential. On the team, returning players from last season such as Josh Cantrell (senior), Robert Barajas (senior), Scott Kelch (junior), Zoey Ridenour (junior), and Cesar Cervantes (junior) look to lead the charge in the upcoming season. Additionally, coach Magana is expecting a lot from freshman like Alonso Sanchez, Jario Torres, Ethan Boss, and Sean Standley to make an immediate impact. When it comes to leadership, coach Magana looks for individuals who are both leaders on and off the mat. He also seeks to build team chemistry by getting to motivate his players during practices, weights, and tournaments, as well as between teammates. With the team spending a total of 10+ hours together on Saturdays and during practice time, it provides the vital opportunity to really get to know one another. Coach Magana plans on implementing new strategies and plays this upcoming season, whilst also recognizing the importance of communication both on and off the court. With academics also remaining high on his priority list, he is committed to running grade reports every Wednesday and having personal conversations with team members who may need extra help. The Thomas Downey High School Wrestling team boasts an impressive roster of experienced and talented wrestlers coming back this season. We have an amazing team this year. Our team captains are senior Nico Lopez and junior Manny Paguaga, and our assistant captains are senior Joel Contreras and freshman Mario Guerrero. Both Nico and Manny have worked diligently for the team during their high school career, and Joel and Mario show amazing promise for the future. We're all very excited to see what this year's team has in store. Everyone is pushing each other to achieve success, both on and off the mat. We have committed to a family atmosphere, providing various team building tasks as well. We want to encourage our athletes to be each others support group, as it\'ll create a stronger bond on and off the mat. Coach Luis Magana knows that a successful wrestling team needs a strong foundation of chemistry and camaraderie. He has implemented a family atmosphere among the squad by having them spend extended hours together at tournaments and practice. He has also provided various team-bonding activities to foster communication and support. With an emphasis on getting to know one another, the Thomas Downey High School Wrestling team is setting the stage for a successful season rooted in trust and loyalty.

I encourage my wrestlers to work together to build eachothers’ strength and also to develop trust in one another; once trust is built, they learn that no one ever quits. Through this, I’ve seen my wrestlers learn how to be tough and stay tough, even in the face of adversity. It is this attitude and approach that has been ingrained in my wrestlers from Thomas Downey High School and has given them the strength and courage to push themselves to their full potential.

This season, we are looking forward to our bi-district tournament, where the most competitive teams in the section will be competing. We have also prepared for some tough LC and Humphreys opponents. As the head coach of the Thomas Downey High School Wrestling Team, I believe one of my main roles is to set expectations, be supportive, guide and encourage our wrestlers throughout their season. This season has been no different. I've held our wrestlers accountable for their performance, pushing them to reach their highest potential as well as reinforcing the importance of practice and discipline. Additionally, I've emphasized the importance of working together as a team which is a philosophy that I personally value. Through communication and collaboration, our team has made great strides in maturing and has shown growth in many aspects. My coaching style is tailored to the individual needs of each team member and ultimately helps guide our wrestlers to success both on and off the mat.

At Thomas Downey High School we focus on proper technique as and mental toughness so our wrestling team is always ready for the challenge. Our coaching staff works hard to make sure our wrestlers have the mental fortitude it takes to compete and succeed at the highest level. It is important to remember that wrestling is both a physical and mental sport, and that the wrestler with the right mindset will always have an edge over the competition. At Thomas Downey High, we strive to instill mental toughness and the right mindset into our wrestlers so they can face any opponent and prevail.

. My coaching philosophy is based on hard work, respect, and being a student of the sport. I want my athletes to be competitive but also to be good students in the classroom, which is a top priority. I emphasize that wrestling is a team sport and I instill discipline, respect, and perseverance in all my athletes. I also try to make sure they have a positive outlook on their goals. Our wrestling team strives to do our best and when we believe in making sacrifices towards our goal nothing can stop us. That’s why every warrior in our team counts and together each wrestler becomes unstoppable!

We have that set expectation that when we speak, we speak in a positive manner and we check in with each other in a mature fashion. We also remind each other to stay focused on the task at hand. It’s important that we as coaches project a positive environment for our student athletes because communication is key in any type of relationship. It’s important that everyone understands what’s expected of them and it’s important that we understand the athletes’ concerns. Communication is paramount for our Thomas Downey High School Wrestling team’s success as it forms the cornerstone of strong relationships and healthy team chemistry - both of which are necessary to achieve success.
