With the start of the high school baseball season just around the corner, all eyes are on the Aliso Niguel Wolverines. After an impressive record of 22-11 last year, including winning the Sea View League Championship and making a run in the CIF playoffs, the team has high expectations for this year. We had the opportunity to speak with Coach Craig Hanson about the team's goals, strengths and challenges, as well as individual players to watch out for this season. Coach Hanson's main goal for the team this year is to repeat as the Sea View League Champions and make a strong run in the CIF playoffs. This will require a combination of key elements, including staying healthy, developing team chemistry, and having all players fully committed to their roles. One player who is expected to play a crucial role in achieving these goals is junior Jarett Sabol. As the younger brother of Stefan Sabol (Oregon/NY Mets) and Blake Sabol (USC/SF Giants MLB), both successful professional baseball players, Jarett brings speed, power, and leadership to the team. He has been a starter on varsity since his freshman year and was even named All-League and All-CIF last year. Another key player to watch out for is senior Brandon Tatch, who has been on the varsity team since his freshman year. A three-time All-League and All-CIF player, he is expected to make a strong comeback on the mound after undergoing right elbow surgery last year. Despite his injury, Tatch was still able to contribute as a designated hitter, showcasing his determination and commitment to the team. Senior Aaron Orwat will also be returning as the starting shortstop for his third year on varsity. Recognized as a 1st team All-League player last year, Orwat is a valuable asset to the team with his defensive skills and leadership. Junior Connor Etnire is another player to watch out for as a promising right-handed pitcher. Last year, he threw two complete games during the CIF playoffs and played a significant role in the team's D3 CIF Championship win. With the ability to throw three pitches for a strike at any time, Etnire's command on the mound will be crucial for the team's success. Senior Jonny Nadolski is also a key player to look out for, as he brings both speed and a strong bat to the team.
