As the spring season approaches, fans of the Basehor-Linwood High School baseball team are eagerly anticipating another exciting year. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Coach Admin Admin to get a preview of what we can expect from the team this season. Suffice to say, there is a lot to be excited about for this talented and hard-working group of players.
Coach Admin is entering his third season as head coach and is proud of the growth and progress the team has made in the past two years. He shared, "We have improved each year and we have several returning players who have been with us for multiple seasons. Our goal this year is to continue that trend and make a run at the state tournament."
One of the team's greatest strengths is their strong lineup of returning players. Senior Nash McCarty, who has committed to KCKCC, will start at first base as he has been doing since his sophomore year. Coach Admin noted that McCarty is not just a powerhouse hitter, but also one of the best defensive first basemen in the UKC. Another senior, Brody Torkelson, is a returning pitcher and has committed to Colby CC.
Coach Admin praised his command and ability to utilize his defense effectively, calling him a "very savvy player." Also returning is senior center fielder Brady VanDonge, who according to Coach Admin, covers gap to gap and makes great contact at the plate. Junior catcher Will Howard is entering his third season as a starter and stands out as a talented player on both offense and defense.
Coach Admin praised his batting skills and described him as a hard worker and exceptional leader for the team. Trey West, a junior shortstop, is also entering his third season as a starter and has developed into a strong leader for the program. He has a great arm, fantastic plate appearances, and is a strong presence in the middle of the field.
Garrett Pierce, a junior infielder, is returning for his second season as a varsity starter and has developed into a solid backbone for the team. He was a top performer on the team last year, leading in almost every offensive category.
Sophomore Nate Martin, who started in the outfield last season, is described as a talented player who is not afraid of difficult situations. He has the best arm in the outfield and covers a lot of ground, making him an asset to the team.
