As the spring approaches, so does the start of a new baseball season at Berkeley High School. The team, led by Coach Curtis Sandeford, is eager to kick off their season and build on an already impressive legacy. In a recent interview, Coach Sandeford shared his goals for the team, highlighted key returning players, and discussed the challenges and strengths heading into the new season. Coach Sandeford’s overarching goals for the team are clear and ambitious – to compete for a league title, make a deep run in the North Coast Section Playoffs, and secure a spot in the State playoffs. These goals show the team’s determination and drive for success, and with Coach Sandeford’s guidance, they are well on their way to achieving them. Returning players have been instrumental in the team’s success in past seasons and are expected to play key roles once again this year. One of the top returning players is Trey Johnson, who was named to the first team all-league as an outfielder. Coach Sandeford says Johnson is a hard worker and a great teammate with a sweet left-handed swing. Manny Selles, another all-league player, possesses a strong arm and excellent speed, making him a valuable player on both offense and defense. Daniel Beadles, who will be attending the University of Pacific on a baseball scholarship, is projected to be the team’s number one pitcher this year. In addition, Will Polishuk, committed to Pomona Pitzer, and Julian Ito, a talented third pitcher, are expected to contribute significantly on the mound. Finally, the team will also be counting on up-and-coming sophomore Issiah Mays who, according to Coach Sandeford, has the potential to be a superstar with his impressive abilities in running, throwing, and hitting. While the returning players are crucial to the team’s success, Coach Sandeford also has high hopes for the new additions to the team. Freshman Quinton Hill has already impressed coaches and teammates with his skill and passion for the game. Keanu Moss and Miles Mino are also expected to make immediate impacts on the team. When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Sandeford looks for players who lead by example and have empathy for others. While he has not yet announced this year’s captains, there are several players who are in the running for this important role.
