I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as the head coach of the Brawley Union High School baseball team and I am confident in our abilities to have a successful season. As we embark on a new baseball season, our main goal is to provide our players with a positive experience. Of course, we also want to perform well on the field, but our focus is on creating a culture of respect, hard work, and teamwork. This will be the foundation of our success. Looking at the returning players, three standouts from last season are Tanner Currier, Ozyel Villanueva, and Rane Reeves. Currier brings a solid glove and competitive spirit to the shortstop position, as well as a strong presence on the mound. Villanueva, who was only a freshman last year, impressed with his pitching abilities and we are excited to see how he continues to develop. And in the outfield, Reeves provides us with plus speed, arm strength, and a reliable glove in center field. We also have some promising new players joining the team this season who we believe will make an immediate impact. Their names will be announced at our first game, so stay tuned! In terms of team leadership, we look for players who are not only talented on the field, but also who embody the qualities of a solid citizen in life and are diligent in the classroom. Our captains are still being decided, but we have several players who are battling for the role. Building team chemistry and camaraderie is crucial to any successful team. To achieve this, we plan on holding team bonding activities, team dinners, and encouraging open communication among the players. It is important that they trust and support each other on and off the field. As a coach, it is my responsibility to motivate my players to push themselves to reach their full potential. I do this by setting high expectations, providing constructive feedback, and celebrating their successes. We also emphasize the importance of a growth mindset and constantly challenging ourselves to improve. One of the biggest challenges we have faced in preparing for this season is the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic. We have had to adapt to new protocols and guidelines, but our players have been resilient and we are grateful to have the opportunity to play. Our schedule for this season includes some tough opponents, but we are looking forward to the challenge. One game in particular that we are excited for is against our cross-town rivals.
